We all know the famous saying, “Everything’s Bigger in Texas.” I think it’s safe to say that everything is weirder, too. From a random pair of legs on the side of the road to a huge fire hydrant painted like a Dalmatian, we definitely have an eye for the strange and quirky. Read about it yourself – here are 10 extremely odd tourist attractions in Texas.
- Stonehenge II (Ingram)
Flickr/matthigh This attraction is an exact replica of the original in England. There are also carbon copies of the Easter Island statues nearby. No need to go overseas to see one of the most famous landmarks ever built - we have it right here in Texas.
- World’s Largest Cowboy Boots (San Antonio)
Yelp/Mike B. These boots weren’t made for walking, but they can definitely walk all over you. They’re located right outside the North Star Mall in San Antonio.
- The Big T. Roadhouse (Adkins)
Yelp/Justin J. This roadhouse hosts a bizarre bingo event every Sunday in which winning numbers are determined by the poop of a chicken. Only in Texas.
- Barney Smith’s Toilet Seat Art Museum (San Antonio)
Facebook/SATXTSAM This just might take the cake as the weirdest tourist attraction in Texas. Retired plumber, Barney Smith, has his work plastered all over the walls of his home. It’s open to the public as long as you give him a call first and let him know you’re coming.
- Frontier Times Museum (Bandera)
Facebook/Frontier Times Museum Who knew we had our own version of ‘Ripley’s Believe It Or Not’ in Texas? If you ever want to see a two-headed sheep or shrunken head, mosey on over to the Cowboy Capital of the World and take a look.
- World’s Largest Fire Hydrant (Beaumont)
Flickr/kt Would you believe this 24-foot tall fire hydrant still works? It was built in 1999 by Disneyland in honor of the release of ‘101 Dalmations" and, for reasons unbeknownst to us, chosen to be placed in Beaumont. Although two other fire hydrants surpass it in size, it’s the largest working hydrant in the world.
- San Antonio Western Shooting (San Antonio)
Facebook/San Antonio Western Shooting If you’ve ever wondered what it would’ve been like to duel at high noon in the Old West, now’s your chance! Get all decked out in your finest cowboy gear and shoot guns that look like they’re straight out of a western movie.
- Huge Pair of Legs (Amarillo)
Flickr/icanchangethisright These legs were modeled after a similar pair in Egypt (but they’re bigger, obviously, since we’re in Texas.) Take a drive down Sundown Lane in Amarillo to see them for yourself.
- See-Through Bathrooms (Sulfur Springs)
Flickr/nsmithntz These are the only see-through bathrooms in America - and they’re out in the open on a busy street for everyone to see. Don’t worry, though, nobody can see in. You can just see out. Still feels like a violation of privacy, don’t you think?
- Big Tex (Dallas)
Flickr/stevenm_61 Of course I had to finish up with the best state mascot ever. I’m not really sure why we get so excited over a huge statue dressed up like a cowboy, but we sure do. I guess it’s just a Texas thing, y’all.
How many of these have you visited? Are there any other particularly strange tourist attractions in Texas that should’ve made the list?
