Wyoming has hundreds of trails that snake throughout the state. However, if you’re looking for trails to hike during the summer months, then you really should check out some of our waterfront trails. Some of them may even provide a way to cool off along the way.
- Greenbelt Trail System
Flickr/swong95765 The Greenbelt Trail System was established in Green River to encourage citizens to be physically active. The Greenbelt Pathways and Trail System leads to Evers Park. Inside Evers Park, you will find the Green River Splash Park. The splash park is located beside a 1,200 foot long lazy river and tubing channel. This trail system leads to all kinds of water fun.
- West Thumb Geyser Basin
Flickr/InSapphoWeTrust West Thumb Geyser Basin is a trail that runs right along the edge of Yellowstone Lake. This section of the boardwalk is next to the Fishing Cone Geyser in Yellowstone National Park. A dirt trail and boardwalk weaves through the geyser basin. The trailhead to this boardwalk is located on the west side of Yellowstone Lake at the south end of Yellowstone. The boardwalk provides great views of the hydrothermal features and of the lake.
- Jenny Lake Trail

This relatively easy trail is located in Grand Teton National Park and can be accessed at Jenny Lake Campground or at several other trailheads.
- Flaming Gorge Reservoir Trails
Flickr/Kenny X. Li Located at the border of Wyoming and Utah, the Flaming Gorge Reservoir is filled with white sandy beaches, clear blue water, and trails for ATVs. This trail makes you feel as if you are actually at the beach.
- Polecat Creek Loop
Flickr/Brenton Cooper The Polecat Creek Loop Trail is another great summertime trail. The trail is an easy and level 2.5-mile round trip hike that passes by Polecat Creek and ponds. There’s a good chance you will spot some ducks, other waterfowl and maybe even some beavers. The trailhead is 16 miles north of Colter Bay Junction.
- Highline Trail
Flickr/Troy Smith There’s nothing more refreshing than frolicking in and around a creek in the summertime. The Highline Trail is a 63-mile trail that is located in the Wind River Wilderness. The trail features a lake but this stretch right along Fremont Creek is particularly nice during the warmer months. Pictured is Fremont Creek and the Fremont Crossing Bridge.
- Mystic Falls Trail
Flickr/James St. John Mystic Falls Trail starts at Biscuit Basin in the Upper Geyser Basin. The 1.2-mile trail leads to a 70’ cascading waterfall that is formed along Little Firehole River in Yellowstone National Park.

Here’s a great video of the Bear River State Park Trail by YouTube user WyomingTourism. Bear River State Park is located in the southwestern portion of the state within the city limits of Evanston. The park is located south of Exit #6 on I-80. This trail in Bear River State Park runs right along the river. There’s a 1.2-mile asphalt trail that includes an arched footbridge that crosses over the river. The 1.7-mile packed gravel trail snakes along the west side of the river. This is a great walking or biking trail.
- Clear Creek Trail
Clear Creek Trail parallels a beautiful little creek in Buffalo which makes for a beautiful bike ride. The path is a rough rolling single track with small rocks dotted along the way. The trailhead is in Buffalo just off of I-16. Check out this video of the trail by YouTube user, DANoelCychosz.
- Cristina Lake Trail
How about a Jeep trail along Cristina Lake? Now, that’s a fun way to tackle a trail in the summertime. Cristina Lake Trail is a 9-mile trail located in the Wind River Mountains. Just a heads up, the trail is very muddy and rocky as you can see in this video by YouTube user, turinho76.
