Sometimes it baffles me how we have been blessed with so much natural beauty within the borders of this incredible state. I know we post a lot of nature pictures here, but I just can’t seem to get enough of the scenery that defines our state. We have everything you could possibly want when it comes to nature, but the scenery of the following 10 places just says “Texas” a little more than the rest.

  1. This peaceful pasture covered with beautiful bluebonnets.

dave hensley/flickr Whoever lives here must feel pretty lucky, because nothing says Texas like fields of green peppered with beautiful wildflowers. I could lay in that field for hours, couldn’t you?

  1. Trees, and lots of ’em.

tarry mcgary/flickr You can’t go too far in Texas without seeing trees, especially in east Texas, where this photo was taken.

  1. This quiet pasture with a small pond cutting through the grassland looks unbelievably peaceful.

carol von canon/flickr Much of Texas looks this way, with not a building in sight. I could sit there all day and just stare up at the clouds…

  1. As much as we have flat prairies, we also have quite mountainous terrain here in Texas.

gary nored/flickr This beautiful shot of the Contrabando Canyon in Big Bend Ranch State Park captures perfectly how the desolate areas of west Texas hold so much natural splendor.

  1. The gorgeous autumn trees reflecting on Cibolo Creek in Boerne, Texas.

kevin/flickr You’ve got a tranquil creek, towering trees, and the place virtually to yourself..what more could you ask for?!

  1. Big Bend National Park, because nothing says adventure and getting away from it all like this beautiful gem in west Texas.

adam baker/flickr Would you stand on that rock like he’s doing?

  1. The mighty Guadalupe River, because summer definitely isn’t complete without tubing at least once!

patrick lewis/flickr I’d have to say in general that tubing is one of the most defining Texas activities. You’ve got nature, good friends, beer, and relaxation. Nothing gets better than that.

  1. Swimming holes, especially the beloved Hamilton Pool in Dripping Springs.

dave wilson/flickr It just wouldn’t be Texas without swimming holes, because we definitely need somewhere to cool off come summertime!

  1. The rolling hills in the Texas Hill Country never cease to amaze me, especially with this view of the Three Sisters on FM 337.

mlhradio/flickr Don’t you just want to hop in the car and take a nice, long ride through the winding Texas roads?

  1. And finally, the always mesmerizing Palo Duro Canyon.

sarowen/flickr I think it defines the state, because not only is it one of the most popular places to visit, but it withstands so much as far as Texas weather goes. And to me, that’s Texas: remaining beautiful and strong, even through life’s storms.

Do you agree with this list? What other places do you think define Texas in all its glory?
