Aruba, Jamaica…Wisconsin? Yah man, islands be here. They might not quite be the warm, sandy, tropical ones you are thinking of, but we have them. Here are 10 you should know about.
- Washington Island
Amy Meredith/Flickr This island is home to about 600 people. It is 7 miles northeast of the tip of the Door County peninsula. You can rent a bicycle or a moped to get around town.
- Madeline Island
uwwees/Flickr This island is located on Lake Superior. There is a population of 300 here, and it is accessible via ferry from Bayfield. Hiking, biking and camping are all big draws for tourists.
- Devil’s Island
Royal Broil/Flickr SEA CAVES. Devil’s Island is a place that you can kayak through in the summer and explore the caves. These caves are made of sandstone that is a billion years old.
- Sand Island
Andrea Pokrzywinski/Flickr Sand Island is part of the Apostle Islands, and it is a great place to camp for the night after a day of kayaking. It is also home to Sand Island lighthouse, constructed in 1881.
- Bear Island
Commonist/Wikimedia This island is so named because when you look at it just right, it looks like a bear. Looking at this photo, the head is to the right and the body is to the left. (We kinda see it). Also, this island is home to actual bears. If you didn’t know, bears are strong swimmers, so don’t think hopping into the water will get you out of a jam if you get too close to one of these guys.

Commonist/Wikimedia Stockton Island is the largest island in the Apostle Islands. It is home to 14 miles of hiking trails. You can arrive here via boat, and stay at one of the campsites.
- Rock Island

- Plum Island
USFWSMidwest/Flickr Plum Island finally became open to the public this past May. It is home to double–crested cormorants, herons, great egrets and gull. There are also deer and coyotes.
- Pilot Island
Richie Diesterheft/Flickr Pilot Island is located off of Gills Rock in Door County. It is home to the Pilot Island Lighthouse, which is constructed out of brick.
- York Island
Commonist/Wikimedia This island is also part of the group of the Apostle Islands. There are three campsites up here for you to stay at, all along the north side of the island.
