Montanans tend to be pretty humble, and that’s a good thing, because let’s face it—we do some things, like deal with winter, better than most. When winter hits, most people complain and spend three solid months inside… but not us (for the most part). We (sort of) embrace winter in Montana… because if we didn’t, we’d be miserable for half the year. Here’s why we do winters right in the Treasure State.
- We’re used to it.
Ranch Seeker / Flickr Yes, winter is cold and it can be inconvenient to get around. But that doesn’t mean we stay home and hibernate (well, all the time, anyway). Growing up in Montana won’t make you immune to the cold, but it does make you tough.
- We find the most amazing ways to pass the time.
Cabin Fever Days Facebook Cabin Fever Days, a 39 year tradition, are held every February in Martin City. They include tons of fun activities including barstool races. The Barstool Ski Races are as wonderful as they sound.
- We have incredible and underrated ski resorts.
Troy Smith / Flickr Whitefish Mountain, Bridger Bowl and Big Sky are some of the best spots to ski in the world… but luckily, not everyone in the world knows that.
- We have ice fishing and dog sledding.
Base Camp Big Fork Facebook No, we’re not the only state who has these things, but we happen to do them very well. We can go on the best dog sledding tours with companies like Base Camp Bigfork.
- There’s the Whitefish Winter Carnival, a magical experience…

- … and let’s not forget Red Lodge Mountain’s Winter Carnival.

- Did we mention we have skijoring?
mwms1916 / Flickr Skijoring involves being pulled by a hose or sled dogs while on skis. This sport may not have originated in Montana, but it was meant for Montana.
- You won’t find a more magical place to go for a sleigh ride.

- Some homes have fireplaces that are used only for decoration. But not here.
Justin Kern / Flickr We put our fireplaces to good use, and some of our best memories involve curling up beside them on a long winter night.
- If the weather does get to be too much, Montana offers a natural respite. It’s called a hot spring, and we’ve got plenty of them.
Bozeman Hot Springs Facebook Treat yourself to a nice, long, relaxing hot soak and you’ll be ready to power through another January.
