Sure, Mississippi does embody all the charm and grace of the South. But sometimes, people in the rest of the country have a few misconceptions about what we’re really like. We’d like to set the record straight here.

  1. We don’t all live on farms in the country.

Ken Lund/flickr We do have some big cities here. The population of Jackson is over 173,000.

  1. Of course, those of us who do live on farms consider ourselves pretty blessed.

  1. We’re perfectly literate folk.

  1. Our state parks show off our beauty, and they’ve even won awards.

Visit Mississippi/flickr We know it’s not good manners to brag…but wow! Mississippi is downright beautiful. We’ve preserved much of that beauty with our state parks, which are constantly named as some of the best places in the country to visit.

  1. We’re pretty cultured here.

  1. Mississippians love all forms of entertainment, but most importantly, we brought the rest of the country Kermit the Frog.

TedXJackson/flickr Can you imagine a world without Kermit? Neither can we.

  1. Our state is full of history…and it’s not all Civil War.

NatalieMaynor/flickr Mississippi has more than 10 Indian Mound sites, for one thing. Our historical sites include plenty of Civil War battlefields and plantations, but we treasure our even older history, too.

  1. Mississippians are patriotic…but we’re not just flag wavers.

D’Lo Mississippi/Facebook During World War II, 150 residents in the small town of D’Lo voluntarily enlisted - 35% of the town’s population! That was the highest percentage of residents enlisting of any town in the entire United States.

  1. Yes, we wear shoes.

Ken Lund/flickr Some of us wear cleats. And we wear them well, thank you very much.
