North Dakotans know what’s good here and no matter what people say there are some things that just seem universally liked state-wide. It doesn’t matter if you’re from the east, central, west, or whatever region of the state, you have almost certainly encountered someone who loves these 10 things:
- Knoephla
Erica Hager/Flickr You don’t have to have a German-Russian grandma to love this stuff; everyone knows it’s good!
- And don’t forget the Scandinavian dishes.
Caren Litherland/Flickr Lefse, for instance, is well loved here. I don’t think I can say everyone loves something like lutefisk…but I know you guys are out there somewhere.
- Country drives
lindenbaum/Flickr I don’t know many people who can’t say they’ve just been out on a drive on North Dakota’s back roads through the fields or pastures.
- Bonfires
Felix Ockey/Flickr Everyone loves a good bonfire get-together!
- Green - lots of team spirit in green!
Tony Webster/Flickr When you’ve got the best college hockey and the best college football teams EVER, it’s impossible not to show some team spirit. Whether you pair it with gold or white, green is OUR color.
- All four seasons
NDPRD/Flickr Sure, people think North Dakota’s winters are a little harsh. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’d prefer having all four seasons over some place hot or tropical that doesn’t get any snow or have trees that turn orange in the fall. There’s just something beautiful about seeing the changes.
- Camouflage
vox/Flickr The florescent orange and camo season is well upon us right now, and you can see just how many people love hunting here…or simply love putting camouflage patterns on EVERYTHING. I saw a full size camo fridge here the other day, and I’m not joking.
- Home-grown produce
Timothy Vollmer/Flickr Outside of the state’s large scale agriculture, there are tons of people here who grow their own veggies and love it. North Dakota has amazing soil for all kinds of produce, but there are a few that tend to be pretty popular around harvest time. Rhubarb, anyone?
- Time at the lake
NDPRD/Flickr Whether you are a fisher, a boater, or a casual beach stroller, I don’t know many people here who wouldn’t jump on a chance to head out to the lake. Even in the winter it’s a popular place; who else is excited for ice fishing soon?
- Caramel rolls

What are some things you love that we missed? Or are you one of those crazy people who don’t love caramel rolls? Let us know!

North Dakota can have a bit of a weird and wacky side, too, like these 10 unusual things we do. Do any of them describe you?
