Wyoming is truly a rugged, beautiful state that still has a lot of the Wild West left in it. Folks here are independent, hard-working and have a strong sense of American values that you just won’t find everywhere. The fact that we’re so much different than other parts of the country means that we’re often stereotyped – rightly and wrongly. When you go out of town, and folks find out that you hail from Wyoming, they often ask these 10 questions.
- Are you a cowboy?
M.Ezzedine/flickr Sometimes the answer is yes, but usually…no. We do have plenty of accountants, nurses, police officers, construction workers, businesspeople and teachers here. Of course, some of them rodeo on the weekends!
- Are you packing heat?
faungg’s photos/flickr Probably. Wyoming has the highest rate of gun ownership in the state. So, don’t mess with us.
- Do you even have a car, or do you just ride your horse everywhere?
Patricia Bauchman/flickr Sometimes we wish we could ride our horses everywhere, but it’s pretty hard to carpool for the kids’ soccer that way.
- How can you shoot those beautiful deer (elk, pronghorn, moose, etc)?
Jane/flickr Because they taste really, really delicious.
- Do you always wear that cowboy hat wherever you go?
Dorret/flickr Whenever possible, yes.
- Don’t you get bored?
Sam Beebe/flickr Are you kidding? With our endless acres of horseback riding, hunting, fishing, hiking and ATV trails we are always busy.
- Do you folks even have paved roads out there?
Brian Skversky/flickr Of course we do! And we have plenty of unpaved roads, most of which take us to the best parts of Wyoming that we’d like the tourists to skip anyway.
- Do you hate living in a state without mountains?
Gord McKenna/flickr While much of the country seems to think that Wyoming is a flat, prairie state, we do have mountains. For instance, maybe you’ve heard of these little ol’ things called…The Tetons?
- Do you make a lot of money with all that gold panning?
woodleywonderworks/flickr Sure, it’s a fun thing to do on a weekend, and the tourists certainly love it. But no…our rivers aren’t just full of gold nuggets waiting to be plucked out of the river and taken to the bank.
- Have you seen the latest episode of [insert whatever stupid TV show the rest of the country is watching here]?
Tinkurlab/flickr Nope. Folks from Wyoming have WAY better things to do than watch television, such as getting outside in the country like this.
Let’s face it – while some of these stereotypes might be true, Wyoming is a gorgeous, amazing place. If you need a reminder, here are 9 Ways To Fall In Love With Wyoming All Over Again.
