Delaware is a diverse state – just ask anyone from New Castle County about Slower Lower, or ask anyone on the bay about life in Laurel. For being such a small state, we represent farmers, sailors, urbanites, students, bankers, and more – different cultures and traditions come from every corner of our state. There are a few things we unite over, though, like good seafood and good salt water taffy. Here are a few others things we can all agree on – things you’ll never catch anyone from Delaware doing.

  1. Calling it a “Hero” or a “Grinder”

Flickr / PlanPhilly Eyes On The Street There’s definitely a divide between Delawareans who call it a “Hoagie” instead of a “Sub” (I’m a Hoagie person myself), but we can all agree that it’s definitely NOT a “Hero” or “Grinder”.

  1. Going to Ocean City, Maryland for Vacation.

Flickr / mo01229 We keep it in state - and why shouldn’t we?! Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Bowers, Lewes, Fenwick Island - the best beaches and boardwalks in the region are in Delaware! The only reason we’d go to OCMD is so that we’ll appreciate the Delaware towns more.

  1. Eating the “wrong” dumplings.

Flickr / misocrazy Slippery dumplings or get out. These round dumplings are un-American.

  1. Making a big purchase out of state.

Flickr / Firelknot We live here for a reason - sure, the scenery is great and the way of life can’t be beat, but we all know it’s for the tax-free shopping.

  1. Ordering Crabcakes Out of State

Flickr / kae71463 Maryland gets a pass here; we can order them across the Chesapeake. But anywhere else? What’s the point? They’re just going to disappoint.

  1. Defending Delaware’s Pizza

Flickr / joepyrek We might love Grotto’s, but we know that the best of the best is just over the border or bridge in Philadelphia or New Jersey. We’ve accepted that. Just don’t make fun of us when we say we like Grotto’s anyway.

  1. Agreeing on the best route to the Beach.

Flickr / Doug Kerr Do you take the back roads? Which back roads? Oh, trust me, there’s a better way to get there - try this.

  1. Explaining Scrapple.

Flickr / Ron Dollete Don’t ask. Just enjoy it.

  1. Skipping Ice Cream

Facebook / Woodside Farm Creamery With so many amazing creameries in Delaware, we’ve got some of the best ice cream in the country. There’s always room for a scoop.

  1. Agreeing on “Slower Lower”

Flickr / Lee Cannon There IS one thing that divides us - literally - and that’s agreeing on the spot that, well, divides us. Does Slower Lower include anything below the Canal? I think so, but many people seem to think that none of New Castle County is considered LSD. What do you think?

Is there anything else you think you’d never catch anyone from Delaware doing? What other things bring our great state together?
