You look outside and the sun is shining so brilliantly, the sky is clear and blue and you can’t wait to get out there and enjoy it all. You hum to yourself as you get dressed, get all your gear ready for the day, and then you step outside and you’re hit full face with what feels like the burning breath of a dragon. Immediately your hair falls flat, your clothes stick to your skin, and you start to feel drips of sweat falling to your shoulders all the while the sun feels as if it is baking your skin as if you were a broiling ham.

Yes, we have all been there. South Carolina summers can be harsh to say the least. Sweltering is a nice word to use for the weather. So, I have put together 10 things that may take a bit of the sting out of that hot summer day when you want to get out of the house, but you don’t want to end up as fried bacon.

  1. Eat ice cream!

Farrukh/Flickr If you want to continue to bake in the summer sun why not do it while eating something cool? And, South Carolina has loads of ice cream parlors to choose from, some of which even serve gourmet flavors!

  1. Head to the park!

havenholidays/Flickr The water park that is! There are many here to choose from and it’s a great way to enjoy the summer day and stay cool while doing it.

  1. Get up close with the fish!

Ryan Dingman/Flickr Yes! Not only is it educational and fun, it’s air conditioned!

Ryan Dingman/Flickr We have one in Myrtle Beach and Charleston so, pile up the car and head that way. I love the aquarium.

  1. The Children’s Museum of the Upstate, Greenville

Meg J/Flickr Targeted for children who are 12 and under, this is a GREAT place to go and get out of the blistering sun. There are loads of hands-on activities and you could spend hours in there.

  1. EdVenture, Columbia

Yeonsang/Flickr

krazeeboi/Flickr It’s the largest children’s museum in the Southeast. There are over 350 hands-on activities for children. So it definitely will keep you and your little ones busy for a while and out of the sweltering heat.

  1. Run to the hills!

PRO-ted/Flickr You heard me correctly. There are many things to do up there like hiking and ogling the waterfalls. Plus, it’s usually quite a bit cooler up there.

  1. Take a dip in the beach!

Connie Ma/Flickr Many people say the air is different on the coast as if there is less humidity. Must be all that water. Still, if you decide to do this on the hottest of summer days don’t forget your sunblock and an umbrella.

  1. Hit a museum!

Wally Gobetz/Flickr With over 400+ museums here in South Carolina, I’m sure you can find a few near you that will keep you out of the house, and some place cool. And, you get to learn neat facts as well as see the most amazing exhibits ever!

  1. Visit one of our many charming towns and do some antique shopping.

donireewalker/Flickr For every town, I’m sure you can find at least one or two antique shops and more than a handful of specialty boutiques. It’s always so much fun to go from shop to shop and look at all the unique pieces they have in inventory.

  1. Find a mall or an outlet.

jpellgen/Flickr There are many here in South Carolina and who doesn’t love to shop? Even if you’re just window shopping, a mall or outlet is a really cool (no pun intended) way to get out of the sun for a few hours.

We all can’t wait for summer to get here after the cold and dreariness of winter, but sometimes summer can be too hot to handle. These are a few ways to beat the heat and still get out of the house. Do you have a favorite way to stay cool during those unbearable summer days? Tell us in the comments below!
