The. Most. Breathtaking. Scenery. I have to say that this was a very difficult task for me. Every town in South Carolina has a charm to it and those times when “Ooooo” and “Ohhhhhh” come to mind because, well, let’s face it, South Carolina is just a beautiful state and every town (large and small) has some magnificent points. When you take that into consideration and you’re asked which ones are the MOST breathtaking, the task gets pretty difficult. However, I believe I have found 10 towns in South Carolina that have the most amazing sights for you to see. Let’s take a look shall we?
- Charleston

Saif Alnuweiri/Flickr Oh, the beauties of Charleston. How many can you count that will take your breath away? Here we have Rainbow Row which is the most photographed and painted scene in America. The one above this is the Dock Street Theater. Charleston abounds with beauty and architecture that will blow your socks off. A must visit if you have never been there. I have to warn you however, there is more to do there than a week will allow you.
- Johns Island
Delk Haigler Photography/FB Nestled in Johns Island is the most spectacular tree this side of the Mississippi! The famous Angel Oak is a sight you will never forget.
- Walhalla
Joe Plocki/Flickr On the outskirts of Walhalla you’ll find Stumphouse Tunnel Park which also includes the Issaqueena Falls which you see pictured above. Did you know that the falls were named after an Indian maiden who risked her life to warn a fort of an impending Indian attack? Oh, and I must say that Walhalla is not too bad of a sight itself so don’t skip through there. Stop, browse, and take in the culture of the Valley of the Gods.
- Greenville
Doug Anderson/Flickr I still think it’s amazing that in the middle of Greenville is this glorious waterfall. Falls Park on the Reedy will beg you to come back again and again. It’s just so peaceful and such a relaxing place.
- Bluffton
haroc/Flickr Ah, historic Bluffton. We see you there! The town is enough to keeping you coming back, but the scenery will stay with you forever.
- Murrells Inlet

- Seneca

David McAdoo/Flickr Seneca is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the sight of those majestic mountains alone is enough, but you’ll also be able to see the native flora such as this gorgeous Mountain Laurel and so much more.
- Abbeville

Tommy Pittard Sr./The Greater Abbeville Chamber of Commerce/FB Abbeville is one of a few towns that will surprise you. From their quaint and charming town square to the historic Abbeville Opera House.
- Newberry

Allen Forrest/Flickr Just as beautiful and charming as Abbeville, Newberry should be on your “must see” list if you haven’t seen it already. Don’t forget to take your own photograph of the Newberry Opera house. It’s such an amazing sight.

Lois Stacey/Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge/FB Those who know of McBee might say that there isn’t much there, but oh, they are mistaken! Here is where you’ll find the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge. It’s the little things that will take your breath away such as those vividly blue Asters, stunning sunning yellow slider turtles, and the Eastern Wood PeWee you see above you.
I suppose breathtaking is in the eye of the beholder. I have to confess that it’s the little things in life that make me smile and make me want to see them again and again. South Carolina holds that breathtaking charm. It’s all over the place. What other places in South Carolina do you believe will take your breath away? Tell us in the comments below!
