We’re not weird. You’re weird. If you’ve spent any time in the 716, you know there are a few “interesting” things only people from Buffalo can truly understand. Here are ten:

  1. Plunging into freezing cold Lake Erie.

WNY Polar Plunge - Facebook It should come as no surprise that the “City of Good Neighbors” would do just about anything in the name of charity - even if it means jumping into Lake Erie in subzero temperatures while sporting bikinis!

  1. Surfing… on ice.

Joe Ross - Flickr Cold and windy are the perfect conditions to head to the lake for some fun!

  1. Partying in the plaza.

Buffalo Sabres - Facebook What’s better than watching a big game on the big screen? Watching it on a big screen outdoors with hundreds of your closest friends at Party in the Plaza! (If only this could happen more often!)

  1. Protecting mailboxes from snowplows.

bug_g_membracid - Flickr If your mailbox has experienced death by snowplow, you know what we mean. Especially in the south towns, you’ll find mailboxes secured by pallets, concrete buckets, and basically anything imaginable to protect them in the winters.

  1. Taking tailgating to the next level.

hunterheitz - Flickr Our tailgating is nationally known for being a bit out of control. Don’t knock it ’til you try it!

  1. Climbing grain elevators.

Alexander Rabb - Flickr While plans fell through for an indoor climbing center inside the grain elevators, word on the street is that these industrial giants make for a great urban climb for daredevils looking for a thrill – though we wouldn’t recommend it because, you know, trespassing laws and stuff.

  1. Riding ice bikes.

Canalside Buffalo - Facebook Buffalonians take to the ice for more than just skating at Canalside, where ice bikes have become a popular winter pastime!

  1. Waiting for “big pick-up day.”

Flickr/Salihan This weird one is especially popular in the suburbs, where people mark their calendars for “big pick-up” garbage day to scour the streets for big finds! You know what they say about “one man’s trash…”!

  1. Staying out until 4AM.

cherrypatter - Flickr Remember in high school when “pulling all-nighters” was so rebellious? In Buffalo, that’s the norm on any given weekend. Our bars are open until last call at 4AM, meaning you get to drive home with the sunrise (or get a ride, if need be)!

  1. Obsessing over hot dogs.

Ted’s Hot Dogs - Facebook We’re known for our wings, but Buffalonians also have another major food obsession: hot dogs. If it’s not a char-grilled Sahlen’s, it’s not a real hot dog. Tell a Buffalonian otherwise and be prepared for an argument! No imposter dogs allowed in the 716.

Okay… so maybe we’re a little bit weird. Share your favorite Queen City quirks with us – we promise we won’t judge!
