People who live in South Dakota know how amazing our state is, and we usually try to keep it to ourselves a bit. For one thing, we’re humble folk who don’t like to be braggarts…and for another, we don’t need every Tom, Dick and Harry flocking to overcrowd all our special places.
Even still, there are some things about our state that are so amazing that we can’t help but brag just a tiny bit. Take a look at this list…but shhhhh…don’t tell anyone. Or at least don’t tell too many folks!
- Our memorial is the best in the country.
Thomas Hawk/flickr Sure, other states have honored past Presidents with memorials. But really…do their memorials each stand 60 feet tall? Ask North Dakotans how tired they are of hearing, “Are you the state with the cool Mount Rushmore memorial?” They must surely hang their heads in shame nearly every day.
- We host the biggest, coolest party.
Catherine Taylor/flickr The Sturgis Rally brings more than 700,000 partiers to South Dakota. And what’s cooler than a party? One with motorcycles, of course.
- We have the best hunting in the country.
USFWS Mountain-Praire/flickr In South Dakota, we teach ’em how to hunt while they’re young, because we have some of the pheasant, deer and elk hunting in the country.
- Fishing? Yeah, we’ve got that covered, too.
Britt Reints/flickr Between our lakes, rivers and streams, we can spend a lifetime fishing and still never see it all.
- We get to keep more of our money.
Miran Rijavec/flickr Who loves taxes? No one, that’s who. South Dakota has no individual income tax, and our sales tax rate is just 4.5%.
- Our Badlands are so, so good.
Diana Robinson/flickr Nowhere else in the world will you find as stunning a national park as Badlands National Park. Its richly-striated rock formations and panoramic scenery are unparalleled.
- Camping in South Dakota is better than anywhere else.
CameliaTWU/flickr Our outdoor spaces offer solitude, beauty and a connection to nature that people in other states surely must miss.
- The Old West is alive and well in South Dakota.
Amy Meredith/flickr There’s gold in them thar hills…the Black Hills National Forest, that is. Our Western heritage and independent spirit is alive and well here.
- We don’t go for that fancy big city stuff here.
Don Graham/flickr Sioux Falls, our largest city, has fewer than 175,000 people. But who needs tons of people to make a city cool? Our city has a waterfall and park in it, along with plenty of great restaurants, shops and recreation areas.
- Our National Forest is a picturesque treasure…and chock full of recreation opportunities
amcox/Tripadvisor The Black Hills National Forest covers more than 1.25 million acres, and the entire thing is pretty much just gorgeous.
- We take care of each other here.
USDA NRCS South Dakota/flickr You’ll never find a better sense of community than right here in South Dakota. We know how to take care of our own, and come together to make our state the best in the nation, hands down.
What other things would you add to this list that we should brag about?
