Pittsburghers certainly have earned a reputation for their kindness, generosity, and…uniqueness. In fact, there are just some things that Pittsburghers do that seem insane to everyone else but these are the things that also endear us to others. Without further ado, here are 11 things that Pittsburghers do that seem, well, a bit odd to others.
- We wave black and gold towels to cheer on the Steelers.
Flickr/Drew Allen Fans from other cities might think we’re weird for waving the Terrible Towel to cheer on the Steelers. But, it sure does seem to do the trick in spurring on the black and gold. And, if nothing else, it sometimes really gets under the skin of opposing players.
- We wear shorts in the winter and…
Flickr/Matt Anderson Sure, we wear shorts on lovely winter days where the temperatures peak in the 70s but Pittsburghers have also been known to sport a pair of shorts and a sweatshirt in the dead of winter, even when snow covers the ground. It’s a Burgh thing.
- We get our weather predictions from the world’s most popular groundhog.
Flickr/Anthony Quintano Pittsburgh boasts some fine meteorologists but generations of Pittsburghers have relied on one adorable fella - Punxsutawney Phil - who has been predicting an early spring or six more weeks of winter since 1886.
- We stop in front of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel.
Flickr/Bill Walsh No one knows why. Some believe a monster lurks within the tunnel, causing drivers to come to a halt. Others have surmised that Pittsburghers are simply afraid of the tunnel. Stopping in front of the tunnel certainly is a Burgh thing, one that even we Pittsburghers might agree is a bit insane.
- We live in really quirky houses and…
Flickr/alamosbasement Creativity abounds in Pittsburgh and you’ll find some really quirky houses when you explore the city and its suburbs. But, one stands apart from the rest: the spectacular Randyland.
- Sometimes travel in driverless cars.
Flickr/Mike Fisher If you live in or near Pittsburgh, you’ve either seen or driven in one of Uber’s driverless cars. It might seem a bit odd to others but the future really does start in Pittsburgh.
- We eat fries on our sandwiches and…
Flickr/Dan4thNicholas Pittsburghers have a longstanding tradition - thanks to Primanti Brothers - of eating fries on their sandwiches. Think about it: An entire meal sandwiched between two fresh pieces of white bread. What could be better?
- On our salads.
Flickr/Chris Brooks If you’re not in the mood for a French fry and coleslaw topped sandwich, try the Pittsburgh Salad - another original from the Burgh.
- We eat and cheer for pierogis and….
Flickr/Christopher Amrich Mmm…mmm…nothing tastes quite as good as homemade pieorgies. And, pierogies have a dual purpose in Pittsburgh. They provide a delicious meal and they run around PNC Park between innings during Bucco games.
- We watch the ball go up on New Year’s Eve and…
Flickr/siram bala Just about every other city that features a ball on New Year’s Eve sends their ball spiraling downward. Not Pittsburgh. The New Year’s Eve ball crawls up to signify Pittsburgh’s moving forward into the new year.
- Speak a language all of our own.
Flickr/Jon Parise Pittsburgher’s speak Pittsburghese. We say yinz instead y’all or youse. It’s Stillers, not Steelers. And…the list goes on.
