All of us that grew up in Rhode Island have so many shared experiences. When we travel out of state it becomes ever so clear that our coming of age in the smallest state in the nation was a one of a kind experience. Looking back there are so many moments that signified major changes and growing older. Here are a few of the most important milestones you probably had if you were raised in Little Rhody.
- Your annual birthday cake from Gregg’s, or Wright’s Dairy Farm
Flickr/Juli Each year older was signified by the enjoyment of that delicious cake from your favorite classic Rhody restaurant.
- Attending your first concert at the Dunkin Donuts Center
Flickr/Jef Nickerson You begged for tickets and finally your guardians took you to see your favorite band at the Dunkin Donuts Center!
- That time you tried the Awful Awful challenge at the Newport Creamery
Flickr/Juli “Drink 3, get the 4th free.”
- Your first field trip to Boston
Flickr/Bill Damon Maybe it was Boston Museum of Science, or maybe it was the MFA, either way, you were overwhelmed by the beautiful city skyline and busy streets!
- Getting your license and driving over the Newport Bridge for the first time
Flickr/Paul Gagnon Getting your license is a huge milestone in and of itself, but all of us Rhode Islanders remember that first drive over the bridge and taking in the ocean air and amazing views of the bay.
- Driving in the snow for the first time by ourselves
Flickr/Kim New England weather is unpredictable and the first year spent with our license is filled with character building moments.
- Your first job
Flickr/marcos ojeda Maybe it was running a Del’s stand, maybe it was Dunkin Donuts, whatever it was, you were so excited to be getting your first job experience and having a little spending money.
- Being allowed to visit Providence with friends and no adults
Flickr/Wil C. Fry Everyone’s first time hanging in Downcity with friends without adult supervision is a true testament to our acceptance as mature young people!
- Ordering your first “Ice coffee regular”
Flickr/luna715 Rhode Island is a serious coffee state and we knew we were big kids when we ordered our first “ice coffees regular,” a popular Rhode Island order.
- Your first time voting
Flickr/Joe Hall Remember standing in line at your town office, or nearby school and running into tons of people who just needed to comment on, “how grown up you are,” while you wait to cast your first vote.
- Visiting URI during your college search
Flickr/cjthibeault URI might not seem like its far away, but for most Rhode Islanders driving to Kingston seems like a total road trip and you were so excited to begin your college tours.
