There are some conversations we’re just used to having in Delaware – like where we’re grabbing breakfast, where we go in the summer, and what the big deal is about our little state, anyway. Here are 11 Delaware questions we’re used to hearing and answering, so familiarize yourself with the First State and let’s get talking.
- Where does Slower Lower begin?
Flickr / Phil Moyer Slower Lower starts at the canal. Anyone who says otherwise is new to the state, and probably calls it Lower Slower Delaware so they can giggle at their LSD bumper stickers.
- What’s in Scrapple?
Flickr / James Lee … actually, let’s not talk about this one.
- Which is the best beach?
Flickr / Bob Mical Everyone has their preference - I love Cape Henlopen and Fenwick Island, but I have friends and family that would fight over whether to visit Dewey or Bethany for a day trip.
- Where can we get Muskrat?
Flickr / James O’Guinn Southern Grill in Ellendale, on Wednesdays. Anywhere else?
- What the heck spilled all over the highway?
Flickr / Doug Kerr Remember that time one million bees swarmed I-95? Or how about last year, when it was pigs, cows, and pennies blocking our road ways? At least we know all the shortcuts and country roads.
- Where’s the coolest spot in Trolley Square?
Facebook / CR Hummingbird to Mars CR Hummingbird to Mars is a top secret spot, but everyone has their favorite dive bar or taco stop in Trolley.
- What’s the deal with slippery dumplings?
Flickr / Jeffrey W. They’re not round because we were raised right. End of story.
- What’s going on at the Bandstand?
Flickr / Mike Mahaffie There’s always something! Whether it’s movies on the beach, a live band, a parade starting or (my favorite) the Christmas tree, locals always know what’s happening at this historic spot.
- Where does the Mason Dixon line start?
Flickr / Doug Kerr There are cornerstones and monuments in a few different places. Ask a Delawarean to tell you why the line was even drawn.
- What the heck is a fighting blue hen?!
Facebook / UD Yes, it’s the UD Mascot. But Delaware Blue Hens fights were, sadly, huge entertainment for soliders during the Revolutionary and Civil wars.
- Where can I get the best salt water taffy?
Flickr / Craig Moe Dolles and Dolles only. There’s nothing else like it in the world.
