While North Carolina and South Carolina are often viewed as ‘one’ or ‘sister states,’ we’re about as different as night and day. Sure, we have some similarities, but North Carolinians, and our culture, are completely different from our neighbors to the south. While there’s not too much beef or competition between states, there are subtle ways that North Carolina is just plain better…

  1. Our BBQ is better

Flickr / Jenica Mustard? Really??

  1. Our beaches are better…

Flickr / Zach Frailey South Carolina beaches are gorgeous, I’ll admit, but North Carolina’s are just better. We have the crystal coast, Outer Banks, and miles of untouched, virgin coastline throughout the OBX.

  1. Oh, and our mountains too

Flickr / Tim Hamilton Have you ever heard someone say they were going to South Carolina to see beautiful mountains in the fall? Exactly.

  1. Our style is better

Flickr / Lisa Moffatt South Carolinians have the reputation for being year-round flip floppers. While we tend to get more snow than South Carolina, you won’t catch us wearing flip flops or cargo shorts in the middle of January.

  1. Our schools are better

Flickr / Justin Henry Clemson and USC are both great schools, but you really can’t compete with North Carolina schools…or our basketball teams.

  1. Our cities and towns are better

Flickr / Desiree Kane Sure, Charleston is absolutely beautiful..I’ll admit. But, North Carolina has a lot more than one shining gem. We have dozens. From quaint cities, to big cities, to the cutest small towns you’ll ever see.

  1. Our state motto is better

‘To be rather than to seem’ is a lot more introspective and interesting than ‘while I breathe, I hope.’ Is this an inspirational poster, SC?

  1. Our state is larger

ltrep.com North Carolina totals 54,000 square miles, while South Carolina comes in at 32,000.

  1. Our culture is better

Flickr / Zach Frailey I think it’s safe to say North Carolinians are more cultured than South Carolinians. With a buzzing art, music, and film scene throughout the state (with a solid reputation and built in history) we just lead when it comes to the arts. We’re also a friendly southern culture. While southern, and hospitable, we still are fairly progressive in our thinking. With eclectic residents of Asheville to laid back surfers along the coast, there’s a wide variety of people here who are not just simply southerners.

  1. Our professional sports teams are better

Flickr / Jason A G North Carolina has a lieu of recognizable professional sports teams. From the Hornets to the Hurricanes. Of course, there’s also the Carolina Panthers. While ‘Carolina’ assumes both states, the stadium IS in North Carolina.

  1. We’re just better

Nuff said.

Before you say “Emory, you’re being biased!” I’ll add a note that while attending an out-of-state University, I came into contact with A LOT of South Carolinians. It was an SEC school, so it was a good mix of southern cultures from multiple states. I’ve learned a thing or two about South Carolinians in my twenty-four years of life. I think it’s safe to say, North Carolina just has so much more to offer! What would you add to the list?
