There is obviously something very special and unique about Alaska because visiting Alaska is pretty much on EVERYONE’S bucket list and it’s not hard to understand why – we have unique attractions that can’t be found in other states. But what people don’t often consider is LIVING in Alaska. My question is, why not? Alaska is really an underrated state and here are some of the biggest reasons why.

  1. We’re the masters of seafood.

Udaho | Flickr Alaska offers fresh seafood year-round! Not surprising considering we dominate the fishing industry.

  1. We’re kind of a BIG deal… literally.

Kevin Dooley | Flickr Don’t underrate us because we’re underpopulated. We happen to be the LARGEST state of them all!

  1. In Alaska you can really stretch out and avoid the crowds.

Guzmán Lozano | Flickr Having the smallest population in the U.S. isn’t a bad thing. In Alaska it’s easy to get away from it all when the most densely populated city is less than 300,000 people.

  1. When it comes to the oil industry, we pretty much dominate it.

rickz | Flickr The North Slope is mostly Tundra but it contains massive amounts of crude oil, you know… liquid gold.

  1. In Alaska you’ll fish with the best of us.

Lee LeFever | Flickr Alaska is a hot spot for the fishing industry. It’s not only a big deal to tourists but it’s a huge deal to the locals here. We live, breathe, and eat all that is fishing.

  1. Alaska has a variety of frontiers!

Praveen | Flickr Our state has multiple islands, it’s surrounded by oceans, it has various climates, and covers a vast amount of land. It’s no wonder Alaska means, “object to which the action of the sea is directed.”

  1. What other state can boast over five different climates?

NASA HQ PHOTO | Flickr From the maritime coastal region stretching from Anchorage all the way down past Ketchikan, to the arctic tundra, I’d say Alaska offers it all.

  1. What other state pays you to live there?

Pictures of Money | Flickr Alaskan residents receive a chunk of change every year from the Alaska Permanent Fund, jealous?

  1. We’ve got air travel covered.

Timothy Wildey | Flickr What other state can boast easy air travel almost anywhere in the state? The bush plane industry is massive in Alaska. We fly where we want, when we want!

  1. The city with the largest population doesn’t even hit 300,000.

Paxson Woelber | Flickr According to the 2010 census, Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, only had 291,826 residents. Imagine living somewhere where you don’t have to worry about lines or insane traffic.

  1. At the end of the day, Alaska offers the Alaskan, a person everyone wants to know.

Rennett Stowe | Flickr The people that live here define the state that we all live in. Adventurous souls who dare to explore the “last frontier,” the “land of the midnight sun,” or also known as “Seward’s icebox.”

Why else do you think Alaska is underrated?
