As New Jerseyans, we’re used to hearing a lot of frustrating stuff about our state. Luckily, we’re tough and we can take it. If we hear any of the following words or phrases, you can be sure we’ll have a quick response. Check out my responses under each photo, and share your responses in the comments!

  1. New Jersey is too crowded.

Flickr/Jason Jenkins Sure, except 22% of it is preserved pine forest and another 17% or so is farmland. Did we mention the beaches?

  1. What exit?

Flickr/ehpien If we live off a Parkway or Turnpike exit, we’ll likely share our exit number with pride. However, not all of us live off an exit and we don’t think it’s funny when you joke about our state being one long highway.

  1. Your state smells!

Flcikr/Monday’s Child That’s because you’re here! Sure, we do have a few refineries, but most of the state smells just fine, thank you.

  1. What’s so great about diners?

Facebook/Kat Vitulano Photos Besides the cake case??? Have you ever had Disco Fries? And did I mention breakfast is served all day?

  1. The Statue of Liberty is in New York.

Flickr/Monika Simpkins Actually, Liberty Island is a federally operated facility located in New Jersey waters. So there!

  1. My taxes are too high.

Flickr/Jazz Guy Yeah, okay. I could buy a mansion in your state for the cost of my property taxes. But it’s worth it to live in New Jersey!

  1. Aren’t your beaches dirty?

Flickr/Nathan Siemers Yes, they are. Stay far away! (More room for us!) In actuality, we have some of the cleanest beaches in the nation, particularly our Cape May County beaches.

  1. Is your family in the mob?

Flickr/Eneas De Troya Do you really want me to answer that question?

  1. What’s Pork Roll/Taylor Ham?

Flickr/Renka Leznicek Don’t worry about it, you can’t have any. (Okay, maybe just a bite.)

  1. So, you’re from “Joisey”?

Flickr/Tambako The Jaguar Just start running now. NO ONE says “Joisey”.

  1. Do you live in New Jersey because you can’t afford New York?

Flickr/Nicholas A. Tonelli No, I live in New Jersey because I love it here. We have our own cities, incredible beaches, beautiful farms, art, culture, history, and so much more!

Don’t forget to share your responses in the comments! Also, add other words/phrases/questions that you’re tired of hearing. I know it can get frustrating, but I’ll gladly field these questions from the poor suckers who underestimate our state and aren’t lucky enough to live here!
