People from Illinois have a lot of state pride and do not want to say things that go against that. But there are some things we believe that, if we are honest, might just admit that we aren’t as hot as we say we are. Here are 11 things Illinoisians will never admit.

  1. That Aaron Rodgers guy is pretty good.

Mike Morbeck/Flickr He’s good. Really good. But Bears fans can still savor that Thanksgiving win.

  1. Okay, we kind of have an accent.

Mike Lewis/Flickr People say that Illinoisians have an accent. And we kind of do. Really, we kind of do.

  1. We are insane drivers.

Beatrice Murch/Flickr Some of us are really safe, but there are some really bad drivers in Illinois. And not all of them live in Chicago, either.

  1. Wisconsin isn’t all bad.

Phil Roeder/Flickr We really rag on Wisconsin, yet loads of us head up north to visit places like Door County.

  1. I don’t like deep dish pizza.

Ernesto Andrade/Flickr That’s sort of sacrilege, but some people really don’t like how thick deep dish is.

  1. People from Indiana are okay.

Abi Skipp/Flickr Another state we love to rag on is Indiana. But there are plenty of people from Indiana who work in Illinois and they are plenty nice.

  1. We don’t have as much going on as they do in New York.

Aurellen Guichard/Flickr Chicago really has that Second City complex. We like to think we have as much going on here, but the truth is that our city just is not as large.

  1. I prefer non-local brews.

Lauren Polinsky/Flickr Illinois has a huge beer scene, and we are famous for tons of local brews. But some of us like non-local brews like–gasp–New Glarus and head to Wisconsin to buy it by the caseload.

  1. I don’t care about sports.

Jim Larrison/Flickr Most people from Illinois are fanatics about the various teams. But there is a strong minority of people who could not care less about our teams, no matter how good they are. They just smile and nod when you are talking sports around the water cooler but they could not care less.

  1. I’ve never been to Chicago.

Vignesh Ananth/Flickr I am always amazed by how many people have never been to Chicago, and this isn’t something people like to admit.

  1. The weather really, really sucks.

Eli Duke/Flickr I think we don’t want to say this out loud because it will only make life worse, but yes, the reality is that Illinois winters can be awful.

But hey, people can’t see the thoughts inside our heads. Yet.
