Unlike the telltale Pueblo and Adobe architecture of New Mexico or traditional Bavarian designs, Montana homes aren’t always distinguishable from others. Our dwellings range from cozy apartments in Bozeman and Missoula to sprawling ranches in our rural areas. That being said, there are a few things you’ll probably find in every Montana home.
- Outdoor equipment.
F. Tronchin / Flickr We’re all pretty equipped to survive both extreme heat and extremely cold weather. It goes with the territory.
- A well-stocked pantry.
Bob / Flickr The majority of Montanans don’t live in town, and some of them live an hour away from a grocery store. Keeping the cupboards and pantry stocked is vital.
- A grill in the backyard.
Keith Jenkins / Flickr We will BBQ when there’s sun in the sky or snow on the ground. We don’t mind, as long as we get our burgers and steaks.
- A snow shovel along with numerous de-icers.
oatsy40 / Flickr Because we enjoy being able to leave our homes from November to March.
- Horseshoes or a horse figurine.
Photo Credit How many of you grew up with a horseshoe placed over the door for good luck? If you didn’t, try it. It’s an honored tradition that goes way beyond Montana. Also, when you were growing up, can you think of many homes that didn’t have some kind of small horse statue in them?
- Signs of where our loyalties lie.
Phil Hollenback / Flickr Do you have any swag from your college days in your home?
- Guns.
Mark Jensen / Flickr We’re big believers in the right to bear arms. But we’re also big believers in gun safety, so don’t worry, they’re properly stowed.
- Movies filmed in Montana.
Paula Tadeo / Flickr We might not have loved “A River Runs Through It” or “The Horse Whisperer,” but you’ll probably find a copy of at least one such Montana movie in our collections.
- Huckleberry products.
theilr / Flickr Whether it be jams, jellies or pancake mix, you’re almost guaranteed to find huckleberry products in our homes. We can’t get enough.
- Montana accessories and decor.
Made in Montana Facebook Because the state pride is strong here, and we like it that way.
- Love.
AgriLife Today / Flickr We know it sounds cheesy, but Montanans have the most amazing families. Walk into an old house that has been lived in by several generations of born and raised Montanans and the love you feel will be palpable.
And in case you need a reminder, Montana is the best state ever.
