We Mississippians tend to be a pretty easygoing bunch. Heck, we’re known for our hospitality. However, there are a few things that out-of-towners can say or do to rub us the wrong way. So if you’re new to Mississippi, take note. Here are 12 scenarios that are practically guaranteed to make a Mississippian cringe.
- Assume everyone in Mississippi lives on a farm.
Jimmy Smith/Flickr Believe it or not, Mississippi isn’t all rural. There are actually cities here.
- Say there is nothing to see or do in Mississippi.
Visit Mississippi/Flickr Think there’s nothing to do in Mississippi? Think again! Mississippi is filled with state parks, historic sites, antebellum mansions, museums, wildlife preserves, unique attractions, and more.
- Ask if people in Mississippi have electricity.
Tennessee Valley Authority/Flickr This is one of the most absurd questions you can ask a Mississippian. This is the south; not the past. Of course we have electricity, and believe it or not, we have running water too.
- Serve store bought tea…
Remon Rijper/Flickr Having a Mississippian over? Don’t even think about serving store bought tea. We can tell.
- …or canned biscuits.
James/Flickr Sure, if you’re in a pinch, serve them. But don’t think you’re fooling anybody.
- Act like every part of Mississippi is the same.
mshistorynow.mdah.ms.gov Mississippi has several regions that are very different from one another. From the northern hills to the southern coast, each region is unique and has something to offer.
- Exhibit poor manners.
Tate English/Flickr Mississippi is the “Hospitality State,” so it should go without saying that being rude won’t get you far. But in case you need to hear it, being rude won’t get you far in Mississippi.
- Comment negatively about our food.
James/Flickr You may think crawfish look weird or that deer are too cute to eat. And that’s fine, but you’re the one missing out.
- Ask about cow tipping.
Juan Lois/Flickr Forget what you’ve heard. This is NOT a common past time for people in Mississippi.
- Tell us that we talk funny.
D. Fajio/Flickr It’s called an accent. If only out-of-towners knew how funny their accents sounded to us.
- Claim you’re not a fan of barbecue.
John Perry/Flickr Say what?!?! Mississippi is filled with great barbecue joints, so not trying any would be a huge mistake.
- Say all mayonnaise tastes the same.
chapstickaddict/Flickr If you’re going to live in Mississippi, you need to know that all mayo is not created equal. The brand you choose is serious business here in the Magnolia State. Whether you prefer Hellmann’s, Blue Plate, or Duke’s, chances are you’ve been eating the same brand for years.
