Vermont is filled with one-of-a-kind people, and with these people come one-of-a-kind spots. From quirky museums to puzzling statues, the Green Mountain State is filled with the kind of mysterious places that make you wonder why and how such a place came to exist. Here are some of our favorite unusual spots in Vermont which set us apart from everyone else, because if one thing is for sure, we certainly march to the beat of our own drum!
- What a tangled web we weave.
Flickr/Mary Loftus Will Knight has one of the most unusual farms in Vermont: A spider web farm. Webs are preserved and made into one-of-a-kind art pieces which are for sale at this one-of-a-kind place in Williamstown.
- File under: Strange
Flickr/Don Shall If you’ve ever wondered what the world’s largest filing cabinet looks like, head over to Flynn Street in Burlington and check it out.
- Ahoy matey!
Flickr/Stephen Clark A 220-foot steamboat in a landlocked state? Check out the amazing Ticonderoga at the Shelburne Museum.
- Hail to the Queen!
Flickr/Dan Century Queen Connie, that is. Head over to Leicester to check out this giant statue of a gorilla named Queen Connie who is holding a real VW Bug.
- Monumental art.
Flickr/826 PARANORMAL The monuments at the Hope Cemetery in Barre are more than just gravestones. These works of art come from the nearby Rock of Ages granite quarry.
- Shhhhhhh…
Flickr/Doug Kerr Youth Triumphant, better known as the whispering statue, has a unique characteristic. If one person sits on one side of the statue and whispers, the person sitting at the opposite end can hear the whisper as clearly as if it were whispered directly in their ear. I can personally vouch for this phenomenon. Despite being next to a noisy 5 way stop light, it works perfectly.
- Zip it!
Photo property of the author Just two blocks away from the whispering statue in Barre you can find the world’s largest zipper.
- It’s a doggie dream.
Flickr/Jay Parker Located on Dog Mountain in Saint Johnsbury is a Doggy Paradise. A place where your four legged friend can roam free on acres upon acres and it even has a dog chapel.
- Treetop Adventure.
Flickr/Ketzirah Lesser & Art Drauglis This isn’t just a whimsical place in Lincoln that you see from afar; this treehouse is called the Tiny Fern Tree House and is available for nightly rentals!
- Not your ordinary museum.
Facebook/ The Museum of Everyday Life The Museum of Everyday Life in Glover is a blend of creativity, reality and imagination. This museum’s current featured exhibit is about… dust?
- Bread and Puppet.
Flickr/Jared and Corin This is not your average puppet show, folks. These giant puppets can be seen making political statements in shows, or you can walk around the barn that houses them. There are many amazing, mysterious and sometimes creepy sights to behold here in Glover.
- What a view!
Flickr/Paul Moody Vermont homes often have unique architecture, but this one in Hyde Park takes the prize. Look at all these different windows! The views from every room must be spectacular.
