I don’t know about you, but I love fall. It’s a magical time when the leaves are turning beautiful colors and the temperatures are finally dropping after the heat of summer. Here are some reasons why fall is the best time of year in West Virginia.
- Fall foliage.
Jeff Walters/Flickr West Virginia has so many great parks and highways to see view the changing colors on the trees. It’s definitely the best time to see West Virginia’s hills.
- Cooler temperatures.
Michael Quick/ Flickr By the time August rolls around, I am so ready to be done with the heat.
- Autumn leaves smell so good.
Dizzy Girl/Flickr Leaves are not just fun to look at; one of the best thing about walking through of of West Virginia’s hiking trails during the fall is getting to smell the leaves.
- Time for soup.
jeffreyw/Flickr Cool weather means we get to warm up with soup and sandwiches, like this delicious-looking tomato soup and grilled sandwich combo.
- Halloween.
Ed Kennedy/Flickr Time to celebrate all things spooky! Halloween is such a fun time of year.
- Hoodies!
Carrie8706/ Flickr It’s finally hoodie weather again. Time to get out your WVU sweatshirts.
- Pumpkin pie.
Mackenzie Mollo/Flickr Pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin everything! Yum!
- Bonfires.
Cathy/Flickr Who doesn’t love a bonfire? Sitting around with friends and keeping warm by a fire at night. In fall it’s finally cool enough to have them again.
- The West Virginia Pumpkin Festival.
I always look forward to this yearly party in Milton to celebrate pumpkins. This year’s event will feature live music and a 5K and a beauty pageant. It’s scheduled for Oct. 1-4.
- Homecoming games.
Ron Cogswell/Flickr Nothing makes me nostalgic like attending the homecoming games of my high school and university. They bring back so many fun memories.
- Trips to the Pumpkin House!
Jennifer Pauley/Flickr Kenova has a fun attraction – a house decorated with thousands of carved pumpkins. It’s neat.
- Hayrides.
Orr’s Farm Market/Facebook Remember when you were a kid and your church or community had a fall festival and they took you on hayrides around the neighborhood? They were so fun! West Virginia has several places where you can take your own kids (or your friends) and experience the same memory.
OK, I know some of these apply to more than just West Virginia, but I still think fall is the best time of year in West Virginia. What are your other favorite things about fall in this state? Let me know in the comments.
