With the onset of winter comes many things: warm coats, hot chocolate, holiday music, earlier sunsets, and cold, cold, cold. Bundle up and get ready to go out and explore. Here are some really cool places to check out during the winter in Pennsylvania.

  1. Climb Wolf Rocks in Monroe County.

Nicholas A. Tonelli/ Flickr Be careful, the path will be slippery. Once you get up there, though, the view will be incredible. Check out those purple clouds.

  1. Visit Gettysburg.

Nicolas Raymond/ Flickr The silence of fallen snow envelops the battlefield in reverence.

  1. Meander along Spruce Run in Pike County.

Nicholas A. Tonelli/ Flickr The charming trail is even more beautiful when the glassy surface of the lake reflects snow-laden tree branches.

  1. Admire one of Pennsylvania’s covered bridges.

Brook Ward/ Flickr This particular photograph is of Henry Covered Bridge in Nottingham; no matter where you are in the state, though, a covered bridge can’t be that far. Pennsylvania has more covered bridges than any other state in the country.

  1. Walk Pinchot Trail in Lackawanna County.

  1. While you’re in the Milford area, stop by Grey Towers National Historic Site.

StillRiverside/ Flickr Home of the Pinchot house, the site is particularly striking during the winter months when snow blankets its beautiful architecture.

  1. Explore Jim Thorpe.

Amelie Lelarge/ Flickr Jim Thorpe is known as the Switzerland of the USA, and thus is an especially great destination in the winter months.

  1. Hike in Warren County’s Allegheny National Forest.

David Johnson/ Flickr The Hemlock trees here provide a uniquely winter-ful outdoor experience.

  1. Flock to Philadelphia.

Ezra Wolfe/ Flickr Philadelphia is the most populous city in Pennsylvania, and thus has plenty of cool things to see and do in all seasons, even during the cold winter months. If you don’t mind crowds, it’s a fun place to be.

  1. Shiver in the face of Lake Erie Ice.

Wayne/ Flickr Going to the beach isn’t exactly considered a winter activity, but as you can see in this photograph taken at Freeport Beach in Erie, it can provide some really cool scenery.

  1. Fly like an eagle at Codorus State Park in Hanover.

Henry T. McLin/ Flickr Chances are you aren’t going to get a view this incredible; this picture was taken with a nest cam. Keep one eye to the sky, though, in case you spot one of these patriotic birds from afar.

  1. Hide indoors.
