All in all, Iowa is a great place to live. But like any other place, there are a some things here you’ll want to steer clear of. Whether you live in Iowa, are thinking of moving here, or are just planning a visit, these are the things you should avoid if at all possible.
- Going out in the summer without sunscreen.
R Kurtz/Flickr You will inevitably end up with a farmer’s tan.
- Going out in the winter without gloves.
Jennifer Adams/FLickr You will instantly regret it. You don’t know how nice fingers are to have until yours are too frozen to move.
- Going hiking in the fall without wearing bright clothing.
Ken Bosma/FLickr You’re likely to be mistaken for a deer…and that would make for a REALLY bad day.
- Going for a backroads drive across the Iowa countryside without filling up first.

- Going to the Iowa State Fair when you’re on a diet.

- Driving too fast on gravel.

- Or driving on wet gravel.

- Getting caught without a tornado plan.
©UCAR/Flickr People may enjoy watching the storm, but it’s important to know when to call it quits and head to safety. Have a safe place to ride out the storm - and a few emergency supplies are always a good idea, too.
- Getting stuck behind slow moving farm equipment.
Michael Kappel/Flickr There’s nothing worse than driving on the highway, and then having to slow down for a line of cars going 25 mph because they’re stuck behind a piece of farm equipment. Hope you’re not in a hurry!
- Buying into the stereotype that Iowa is boring.
natron_bomb/Flickr We have so much more to offer than most people expect. Whether you call this place to home, or are just passing through, there’s no reason to ever be bored in Iowa.
