Living in Florida is a unique experience. Our state is a huge melting pot of all kinds of people, both native Floridians and transplants, set in a unique environment, with weather and wildlife that’s different from the rest of the country. So it shouldn’t be surprising that Floridians do a few things that might seem strange to folks in the rest of the country (but perfectly normal to us). Here are a few of the “weird” things Floridians do:
- We coexist with gators, bugs, snakes, and sharks like it’s no big deal.
Flickr/Trish Hartmann That’s the price of living in paradise.
- We’ll walk casually through rain without an umbrella.
Flickr/Bobby Ford Random showers are just a part of life here in the Sunshine State. You can’t predict them, and they don’t usually last long. So why bother with an umbrella?
- We’ll wear flip-flops year-round.
Flickr/Cíntia Regina And pretty much everywhere, on any occasion.
- We’re pretty nonchalant about hurricanes.
Flickr/Roger W There’s a whole hurricane season here (and it lasts about half of the year). Sometimes, we even have hurricane parties.
- We’re obsessed with a grocery store.
Flickr/Daniel Oines Even if you don’t always shop exclusively at Publix, you have to admit Pub subs are the best.
- We have annual passes to Disney World.
Flickr/Ashley Okay, not everyone does, but you probably know at least a few people who are either going to or just came back from Disney World every time you talk to them.
- On New Years Eve, we drop a giant shoe with Sushi in it. (Sushi is a drag queen).
Flickr/sandwich Key West has plenty of other unique traditions, too.
- We dress up like pirates on days other than Halloween.
Flickr/Ran Allen It’s a way for us to celebrate our history … and an excuse to party like pirates.
- We’ll break out a sweater when it hits 60 degrees.
Flickr/Dawn Ashley Hey, we like to stay warm. That’s why we live in Florida.
- We make Key Lime everything.
Flickr/inazakira It doesn’t stop at chocolate-covered Key lime pie on a stick. There’s Key lime Ice cream, cake, shakes, doughnuts, salsa, jelly, soaps, lotions, and everything else you can imagine.
- Christmas here is a little bit different.
Flickr/ClaraDon We deck the palms, wear shorts on Christmas, and our snowmen are made of sand.
- We practically come out of the womb knowing how to swim.
Flickr/Donnie Ray Jones Floridians are a semiaquatic species.
What do you think? What are some other things Floridians do that seem weird to everyone else?
