There are certain things that define the typical Michigan household. It’s gotta do with the geography of where we live: a cold, wintery climate. And a lot to do with the deeply-held traditions we all share. Here are some of the things that we absolutely cannot live without in Michigan.
- The winter clothes closet.
Deaf RED Bear/Flickr The winter collection is palpable. So you know you need the proper storage facility to store it all.
- A tub of Superman ice cream.
Josh Friedman/Flickr It’s one of those sweets that we’re known for. .. So it only makes sense to have a steady supply should the mood strike you.
- The Michigan regalia.
George Thomas/Flickr Let’s face it, a front porch without a visible display of Michigan Pride just feels… Naked.
- Cans for recycling. Lots and lots of cans.
Kairon Gnothi (Opportunity Knocks)/Flickr Because when it’s time to return the cans, you want to make it worth your while.
- The coatroom/vestibule.
Drew Leavy/Flickr It’s that space between the front door and the front room, where you leave your muddy boots and hang your parka.
- The endless supply of homemade preserves.
Shanna Trim/Flickr Because you know that when winter comes along, you’ll still have your cravings for locally-grown fruits.
- The basement.
George Thomas/Flickr I mean, where else are you going to have your man cave?
- The cornhole set.

- Proper tool storage.
Rubbermade Products/Flickr We in Michigan like to DIY, meaning roll up our sleeves and fix or make for ourselves. That means we’ve gotta have plenty of room for our tools.
- Ample snack supply.
lorange/Flickr Detroit was at one time the potato chip capital. So no wonder we have such a fondness for munchies.
- A proper ice scraper.
Kārlis Dambrāns/Flickr Out here, you’ve gotta have all the bells and whistles for your ice scraper. Nothing flimsy.
- Plenty of family photos.
@serenamaria36/Instagram OK, so I’ve got a wall for the beagle Ralph. But no matter where you find your family, you know every Michigan home has plenty of space to celebrate it.
You can’t deny it, you’ve seen at least a few of these things in just about every Michigan household, huh? Tell us though, what are you absolute must-haves in your home?
