From the many battles that have happened here to mysterious creatures that have been seen roaming (and flying) around South Carolina there’s no question that there’s a lot of terrifying things going on in our state. We have many legends, in fact, we have so many of them that there have been books upon books written about them and there are many paranormal research groups that have come in and gathered data about the various happenings. Here are 13 reasons why South Carolina may just be the most terrifying and spooky state in America.
- We are a very old state.
Aaron Morton/Flickr South Carolina is one of the original 13 colonies. Hence, it has been here forever and with that being said…there are many stories and much energy floating around here.
- And we have the oldest city.
PROOnasill ~ Bill Badzo/Flickr Charleston is the oldest city in the United States. You can’t turn a corner or walk down a street that doesn’t have some sort of story attached to it. Charleston alone would make South Carolina the scariest state to live in.
- We have a long tradition of bloody war.
Lee Wright/Flickr Bloody battles from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War were fought here and I’m quite sure that there were some before the Revolutionary War that have not been documented.
- We have many old cemeteries.
Trisha Fawver/Flickr South Carolina has many terrifying and spooky cemeteries. Some of them are documented and some have been lost to time. Are they just places for the dead to rest or are they doors to the present for the dead to use.
- Our state is home to a lizard man.
mikequozl/Flickr Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp has been talked about for a long time. He was first seen in 1988 and he’s not the only creature that has been seen skulking about South Carolina…
- And bigfoot.
JD Hancock/Flickr Which brings us to Bigfoot. Many sighting have been reported over the years regarding a huge, hairy, ape-like creature that has scared dogs and people alike.
- In fact, our wild lands could be hiding just about anything.
Hunter Desportes/Flickr Talk about terrifying and spooky? South Carolina has many, many acres of woods and swamps which could be home to various creatures of the likes you would never want to meet face to face. I have walked through some of the swamps and forests and many times I have felt like I wasn’t alone.
- We have so many haunted roads.
Dee Ashley/Flickr And those roads you drive on…yeah, about those. South Carolina has so many stories about haunted, terrifying, and spooky roads there isn’t enough time in one day to tell all the tales.
- We have a tradition of serial killers.
PRODavid Goehring/Flickr South Carolina was home to Pee Wee Gaskins, one of the most prolific serial killers in the South. We have yet to find all of his secrets and I doubt we ever will. Not to mention that many others came before him and after him. South Carolina is also known to be home to the first female serial killer…
- Our skies are filled with the unexplainable.

davidd/Flickr Let’s also talk about the myriad strange occurrences that have been witnessed above the air in South Carolina: Undulating and strange clouds, floating orbs of various colors, UFO sightings, and pterodactyls. Yes, there have been reports of pterodactyls over South Carolina.
- We also have tenacious witches.
PRODiego Sideburns/Flickr Did you know that witch trials were held here in South Carolina? One of the supposed witches was tried and convicted. Despite at least 4 execution attempts she lived to old age and is said to still haunt the courthouse.
- And pirates.
Brett Kiger/Flickr Pirates were constants here. They have left their memories, their treasures, and their bones…
- Some of our weirdness seems downright demonic.
Hunter Desportes/Flickr If all I have mentioned doesn’t yet make you wonder if South Carolina is not at least a bit terrifying or spooky, maybe I saved the best for last. In the upstate of South Carolina you will find a place known as the Devil’s Stomping Ground. Ever hear of this place? They say that nothing grows here and that anything placed inside will be found outside the next morning. Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, hallucinating have all been reported while standing inside for any length of time. One has to wonder….
Time is neither good nor bad. In the time that South Carolina has been here, it has collected and stored a lot of energies and one has to wonder if the good and bad balances or if one outweighs the other. What do you think?
