I think we can all agree that Texas is far from “normal,” (whatever that means) but the things that make us a little strange are also the things that make us incredibly unique. The other states might not understand, but we don’t have a history of caring too much about their opinions anyway. Here are 13 reasons why Texas is weird…and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
- Our pride is bigger than Texas itself.
Flickr/BrandonLord We might greet people with, “Hi, I’m from Texas. What country are you from?” but it’s not our fault - our state is just that awesome.
- We measure distance in hours, not miles.
Flickr/dgoomany Texas is nearly 900 miles across, so we’d rather know how long it’ll take us to get somewhere rather than how many miles away it is.
- If the ice cream isn’t Blue Bell, we won’t go near it with a 10-foot pole (and we’ll eat it during recalls).
Flickr/criminalintent If listeria is the way I go, at least I’ll be going with a tummy full of deliciousness.
- Tacos are a breakfast food for us.
Flickr/James And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
- We come off as overly friendly sometimes.
Flickr/stuseeger It’s a little thing called Southern hospitality, but y’all northerners wouldn’t know anything about that considering you can’t even hold doors open for people.
- We have our own language.
Flickr/Gregory Morris We’ll speak Texan to you and won’t care if you don’t understand.
- Our chili doesn’t have beans.
Flickr/jamiepetra But we invented chili anyway, so it’s our way or the highway.
- We all drive huge trucks.
Flickr/pnoeric You might be intimidated, but we don’t care.
- We have an…interesting homecoming tradition.
Flickr/henry_huey Nobody knows for sure why our high school girls cover up their beautiful dresses with these atrocities, but they’ll probably keep doing it for the rest of eternity.
- Our everyday footwear of choice is cowboy boots.
Flickr/Claudia Daggett Out to eat? Boots. Shopping trip? Boots. Getting married? Boots.
- High school football isn’t just a sport…it’s a lifestyle.
Flickr/lafayettekiwanis Our Friday night lights are dear to our hearts - even more so than college and professional games.
- We always have to do the most.
Flickr/stevenm_61 You know the saying, “Everything’s bigger in Texas.” It couldn’t be more true, so don’t even think about trying to upstage us.
- Our obsession with Whataburger is borderline unhealthy.
Flickr/minhimalism Sometimes, we even steal our table numbers. We just can’t help it.
