We the people have a very real struggle in Kentucky with a variety of things including communication, weather, sports, stereotyping and more. If you have lived here for a while, then you have dealt with at least a few of these 13 ways we struggle in Kentucky:
- Giving directions for rural areas.
Google Trying to explain to watch for a red barn, turn by the half collapsed building, etc. etc. can be a challenge. Some people give you a look like you are asking them to drive into Deliverance.
- When your hic speak becomes stronger according to levels of excitement.
Thomas Hawk Not everyone speaks in hic, but those that do can relate. In a chaotic situation I have heard; “You sound like Daisy Duke would on a few pots of coffee.”
- When you ask for a coke and they say, “We have Pepsi.”
Peanutian We aren’t asking for the brand, but usually just a caramel colored soda, pop, or whatever your favored term is.
- When people bring up Paris and Providence, we automatically assume they’re talking about Kentucky.
J Stephen Conn They are nice little towns. Why not?
- When you try to provide a unit of measurement and receive a quizzical stare.
Lauren Later you are told bushel and a peck are not common vender speak… even when buying produce.
- The intensity that hangs in the air whenever Kentucky and Louisville play against one another.
Ky Sports Radio Some fans wear war paint and school colors WILL be represented. The pressure gets to be too much for some.
- The one time you are in a rush and traffic is a nightmare.
Bob Pagini Dependent on your area, this can be due to farm equipment, construction equipment, an Amish buggy, the dreaded “wide load” or just people rubbernecking something.

- Be observant of wildlife when driving.
USACE This does not just pertain to rural areas. Deer, fox, raccoons and even coyotes are seen in some of our bigger cities, including Louisville.
- The summer melting.
Louisville Climatetemps The humidity in some of Kentucky’s river towns can make you feel like an elephant is sitting on your chest. Louisville was a reliable example due to its consistent humidity.

WLKY As you bounce about in the car, you look and see a perfectly smooth, clearly marked bike lane on both sides of the road. Seriously…
- When you leave home in shorts and a t-shirt, but find yourself in a snow storm four hours later.
