Anyone who’s ever moved out of state has at some point thought about moving back. Many actually do. Whether they left for a job or some other reason, moving back to South Carolina is synonymous with coming home. And that “in-between” time? The time where you have to live somewhere else…well, let’s just say there are some things everyone thinks about when life forces a move out of state. Here are some of the major ones:
- The Beach
Flickr/Let Ideas Compete It’s impossible to leave the Palmetto State and not miss the beach, even if you lived inland and only visited occasionally. Just knowing it’s nearby makes all the difference in the world.
- State Parks
Flickr/Phillip With 46 counties and 47 state parks, when you’re in the State of South Carolina you’re never very far away from a natural paradise.
- The Mountains
Flickr/Janet Tarbox Anyone who’s moved away misses the transition from sea level to more than half a mile above from one side of the state to the other. Are there other states with higher mountains? Sure. But there are no mountains quite like those in South Carolina.
- Beautiful Landscape
Flickr/Matthew Trudeau Photography No other state can possibly compare to the natural beauty found in South Carolina. From the live oaks draped in Spanish moss to the evergreens in the upstate, the Palmetto State is simply gorgeous.
- Football
Flickr/Jason A G No matter where you go, you’ll never find the games as exciting as in your home state, unless of course, your home team is traveling to your new state. Even then, it’s still not the home field.
- Wardrobe
Flickr/Rachel You long for the days when so much of your wardrobe consisted of flip flops, shorts and tees. And what IS this new work thing they call a “dress code?”
- Second Thoughts
Flickr/Chris Ford If you moved north…there are moments when you’ve wondered what on Earth you were thinking…
- Iced Tea
Flickr/Mike Mozart Why can’t everyone make tea the normal way, with sugar or sweetener already in it?
- Shrimp and Grits
Flickr/protoflux Where else are you going to get culinary perfection for your Shrimp & Grits fix? No one makes them like they do in South Carolina. You tell yourself, “I’ma get some real shrimp and grits the next time I go home.”
- …And Pimento Cheese!
Flickr/Palmetto Cheese …no one makes it like you find it in South Carolina!
- Nobody understands a South Carolinian - like a South Carolinian.
Flickr/Jennifer & Mavis Yen What is it they say? You can take the girl out of South Carolina but you’ll never take South Carolina out of the girl. Nobody quite “gets you” like your friends and family in South Carolina.
- Dialect
Flickr/D.Fajio You miss that southern speak and the various dialects from around the state. The Palmetto State is home to quite a few accents, and they’re all endearing.
- There’s no place quite like home
Flickr/Paul Hamilton Seeing this sign as you drive back into South Carolina almost feels like you never even left.
Has life ever taken you out of state? What are some of the things you’ve missed the most? We’d love to know in our comments.

Just for fun, here are some “tongue in cheek” reasons to not move to South Carolina.
