If you live or grew up in Louisiana, these are the foods and drinks that are your comfort food. Truth be told, just being able to access these foods on a regular basis is one of the main reasons I stay in Louisiana. There’s just nowhere else in the country to get a satisfying version of basically any of these foods. Be prepared to get hungry after this post!
- Boiled Shrimp
Louisiana Sea Grant Collection / flickr Ideal preparation: go down to a gulf coast town early in the morning to pick up the shrimp, have them in your boiler by 11am for the perfect lunch.
- Po-Boy
Buck82 / flickr From roast beef to this fried oyster version, there’s something for everyone in a po-boy.
- Fried Okra
Thebittenword.com / flickr Perfect fried okra sauce: 1 part mayonnaise, 1 part crystal, 1 part tony’s.
- Coffee & Beignets
Gwen / flickr Make sure your coffee has chicory in it if you want the real Louisiana experience.
- Cracklins
Amy / flickr One tip if you’re making these at home: make sure you do it outside.
- Boiled Crawfish
Billy Brown / flickr Some people don’t realize that corn and potatoes are as essential to boiled crawfish as the crawfish themselves!
- Barq’s
Kevin O’Mara / flickr There’s just something missing if you sit down to have a po-boy without a Barq’s.
- Abita Beer
Michael Bentley / flickr Before the huge craft beer craze took off, Louisiana had this dearly loved brew.
- Red Beans and Rice
Jeffreyw / flickr You know you’re in the right place on a Monday if there’s a red beans and rice special.
- Gumbo
Robert Terrell / flickr Everyone has their favorite type–seafood, chicken & sausage, gumbo d’herbes.
- Meat Pies
Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourism A North Louisiana favorite, these delicious pies are the best snack.
- Boudin & Andouille Sausage
Artizone / flickr The King and Queen of Cajun sausage, there’s just nothing quite like this pair.
- Jambalaya
Gunnar Grimnes / flickr No real Louisiana spread is complete without a bowl of this.
- Fried Pickles
Ame Rainey / flickr Just make sure you have a side of ranch.
