With near-perfect weather year-round, incredible beaches and a laid-back lifestyle, the Hawaiian Islands are simply paradise. In fact, the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index has named Hawaii the happiest state in the country this year, the fifth time the Aloha State has been awarded this honor.

But not all cities are created equal, which is why we’ve compiled this list using data found from RoadSnacks.net to determine the happiest cities in the state. We removed housing communities from the list, such as Ocean Pointe in Ewa Beach, while keeping all census-designated places, cities and towns in the rankings. Keeping this in mind, here are the 14 happiest cities in Hawaii, ranked from least to most happy.

  1. Hanamaulu

Archigeek/Flickr With less than 5,000 residents, this sleepy Kauai town is full of smiling faces who surely must enjoy their laid-back lifestyle and the phenomenal scenery.

  1. Pukalani

Abraham Wallin/Flickr This small upcountry Maui town is one of four major population centers on the island, but only has 8,000 residents – of which 59 percent are married.

  1. Ahuimanu

Oahu Real Estate/Website More than 70 percent of residents here own their own homes, and I’m sure those stunning views help keep Ahuimanu residents smiling.

  1. Waipio

Chris Hoare/Flickr This central Oahu town boasts above average home ownership and marriage rates.

  1. Halawa

Marvin Chandra/Flickr Perhaps Halawa residents are happy because they are surrounded by the lush, undeveloped Halawa Valley.

  1. Royal Kunia

Harlan Sheppard/Flickr Though Royal Kunia and Waipahu are separated only by H-1, the two areas couldn’t be any more different – 67 percent of Royal Kunia residents own their homes, compared to just 54 percent of Waipahu residents.

  1. Kaneohe

Brock Roseberry/Flickr While just over half of Kaneohe residents are married, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.

  1. Pearl City

D Coetzee/Flickr Pearl City boasts easy commute times for those working at Pearl Harbor, and a majority of residents are married and own their homes.

  1. Kapolei, Oahu

Joel/Flickr Known as Oahu’s “Second City,” Kapolei is a booming city full of quiet residential neighborhoods, and all the amenities you could ever want or need.

  1. Aiea

Ajay Suresh/Flickr Nearly 65 percent of Aiea’s almost 10,000 residents own their homes. Aiea is also home to the Aloha Stadium, pictured above.

  1. Waikele

Wounded Warrior Regiment/Flickr I’m sure easy highway access, fabulous outlet mall, and stellar golf courses make Waikele a happier place to live.

  1. East Honolulu

Chris James/Flickr Beautiful scenery and shorter commute times make this area most desirable. According to areavibes.com, East Honolulu has the highest livability rating in the state, and is number 29 in the nation.

  1. Mililani

Alex Avriette/Flickr This family-centric community, where approximately 75 percent of residents own their homes and 58 percent are married, is a wonderful place to settle down and raise a family.

  1. Heeia

W Koscielniak/Flickr An astonishing 88 percent of residents own their homes in this residential area. Located just north of Kaneohe is the Census-designated place of Heeia, the happiest city in Hawaii!

I wonder what it says about the islands that 12 out of 14 of the happiest cities are all on Oahu – I’m sure it has something to do with the potential for career development as compared to the neighboring islands.
