In Delaware, we live a different life than those in other states. We’ve got our favorite foods, our history and culture, our traditions and our close-knit community. In fact, many people who aren’t from Delaware can’t qute understand just what we’ve got going on. Read this list about what makes our Delaware life unique and see if you can relate.

  1. Only WE can make fun of Delaware.

Flickr / Peter Miller Right off the bat, let’s set one thing straight. Only we can make fun of the first state. So please, save the Dela-where? jokes for someone else.

  1. Scrapple and Egg from Wilson’s is the Best Sandwich on Earth.

Facebook / Wilson’s General Store This one is simple, because it’s true. Outsiders probably won’t understand that a rural general store can make the best sandwich that’s ever been made, but if you’ve ever stopped by this Georgetown establishment, you’ll get it.

  1. We love our local restaurants…

Facebook / Boondocks Restaurant In Delaware, there are plenty of chain restaurants, but not many CROWDED chain restaurants, because we love our local restaurants and we love supporting small businesses. Plus, the food is just better.

  1. …and our local distilleries and breweries.

Facebook / Painted Stave Distillery We’re clearly proud of Dogfish Head, but Painted Stave gives us some Delaware pride, too. You can find pretty much anything brewed or distilled right in Delaware.

  1. We really appreciate the rural life.

Flickr / Patrick Nouhailler It’s called “slower lower” for a reason, and it’s because we really take our time and soak up all the benefits of small town living. Most of our towns don’t even top 5,000 residents!

  1. But we can certainly hold our own in a city.

Flickr / Edward Weston Delaware life translates pretty well to Wilmington, too. Rodney Square and Trolley Square are full of culture and history, and the DuPont Estates are all located in Wilmington’s city limits, too.

  1. We love Firefly, and we hate Firefly.

Facebook / Firefly Festival Most of Delaware life is based around slow paced action in areas without any crowds - so Firefly certainly shakes things up. While we’re proud of the recognition the state gets for hosting this amazing festival, navigating the crowds also makes us a little anxious.

  1. Horseshoe crabs are unavoidable.

Flickr / Jeffrey We almost consider them pets if we live on the coast - they’re everywhere, all summer long.

  1. We still love our high school friends.

Flickr / Mike Mahaffie While many students in other states head off to far away colleges and never return home, in Delaware, you keep in touch with your high school friends for life. Maybe it goes back to the small town mentality.

  1. We really cherish our history.

Flickr / Dan Delaware was the first state, and was a crucial part of forming the nation as it exists today. And we’re proud of the fact that our small wonder made such a big impact on American history.

  1. Seafood is life.

Flickr / bigbirdz We exist on this stuff. Delaware blue crabs and Delaware Bay oysters are staples at nearly every Delaware restaurant, and Delaware life wouldn’t be the same without an almost endless supply of great seafood.

  1. Our small towns are sickeningly charming.

Flickr / Ismo In every corner of the state - from Hockessin, out to Lewes, down to Selbyville and over to Laurel - we have the most charming small towns that are straight out of a storybook. And we absolutely love them.

  1. We know all the back roads.

Flickr / Mark Goebel Don’t worry about traffic here; we’ve got a back road for everything. Never mind that many of our “shortcuts” take longer… we’re kind of set in our ways.

  1. You go to the beach in September.

Flickr / Jeffrey Local Summer is the best time to visit the world-famous Delaware beaches, because you’ll avoid the crowds and still have amazing weather and water temps.

Delaware’s got so much charm and history, and much of it is reflected in our businesses and restaurants. If you really want to feel the Delaware love, visit one of the 9 most historic restaurants in Delaware.
