Everyone who has left the great Commonwealth of Virginia knows that you don’t necessarily have to live in Virginia to be a Virginian. Moving away is certainly bittersweet to those who have grown used to the bizarre yet common customs of living here. Once you’ve left, chances are you’ve thought any of the following things at least once during your time away:
- Where on Earth are all the living museums?
Tom Simpson/flickr Sometimes we take advantage of Virginia’s extensive history, forgetting that nowhere else features a Jamestown, Williamsburg, or Yorktown.
- Is there anywhere to get a southern meal around here?
Eugene Kim/flickr Even when you visit another southern state, you’ll probably find yourself craving Virginia’s special version of southern cookin'.
- Why does everyone think I have an accent? Or expect me to have more of an accent?
Alexandra Bellink/flickr You might miss being around folks that share your unique Virginian dialect – whatever that may be.
- What I’d give to see a Blue Ridge Mountain sunset right now…
Ken Lane/flickr Those colors!
5…or take a stroll along the Eastern Shore.
Ken Lund/flickr That shoreline!
- Is it even summer without a trip to Virginia Beach?
Jeff Self/flickr Not visiting this pristine beach just seems wrong.
- Or the state fair?
CJ Oliver/flickr Virginia just knows how to put on a great state-wide event.
- Or lighting bugs?
Windslash/flickr And why does everyone keep calling them fireflys?
- Speaking of seasons, winter sure is pretty in good ole Virginia.
Virginia State Parks/flickr Snow or no snow, Virginia is a winter wonderland.
- The same goes for fall.
Virginia State Parks/flickr If you move to a place without much of a fall season, you’ll definitely miss Virginia’s gorgeous autumn colors.
- Ham biscuits…
stu_spivack/flickr Even if you didn’t eat them much when you lived in Virginia, somehow you’ll crave them once you leave.
- Blue crab
Schlomo Rabinowitz/flickr Nothing can compare to VA’s seafood.
- You’ll miss your favorite Mom & Pop restaurant
David Clow/flickr Can’t you smell those burgers now?
- There’s no place in the world quite like Virginia.
Jon Cornwell/flickr Let’s face it, you could travel half-way around the world and you won’t find anywhere that feels like home in the same way Virginia does.
This list is just a beginning and could run for many more pages. So now we’d love to hear from you! If you’ve ever left Virginia, what have some of your thoughts been?
