Fall is still TECHNICALLY a few days away, but I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t already there in my head. With the weather cooling down, the leaves just starting to change and the Halloween decorations out in full force, there’s no denying that fall is on it’s way. And I, for one, couldn’t be happier. While all the seasons in Virginia are beautiful, there’s just something special about fall. And here are just a few of the reasons why…
- FOOTBALL SEASON HAS BEGUN!
Big Ed’s Photos / flickr Bring on the tailgates, team gear and throw in a giant foam finger for good measure. College and high school football has begun…hooray!
- The Pumpkin Spice is out in full force.

Even the marshmallows are Pumpkin Spiced.

- A little bit of apple everything.
Via Tsuji / flickr Apple cider, apple festivals, fresh apple butter, apple picking, apple pie, apple cake…you get the point. Apples may be one of the greatest things about fall in Virginia.
- Halloween decorations are out…oh wait, that started after 4th of July.
Bill Rogers / flickr Right. So Halloween decorations being put out are not so much an indicator of fall as they are a sign that the last mass commercial holiday has ended. Oh well. I love it anyway.
- Girls begin to dress like Han Solo again…and it’s not even Halloween yet.

- Hipster Bars start to look like a Loggers’ Convention.

- Fall Festivals and Harvest Festivals are “cropping” up everywhere.
Big Ed’s Photos / flickr Yay for fall! Whether at your local school, in town, at the local vineyards or apple orchard, fall festivals are everywhere. Bring on the mountain music and Brunswick Stew. I’ve been waiting for this all year.
- The kids are (FINALLY) back in school.
Exchange Photos / flickr I’m not saying that summer was long…I’m just saying that it seemed like it might never end. But the kiddies are back to the books and parents everywhere are rejoicing.
- Wedding Season is winding down.
Whitney Porter / flickr There are few things more lovely than a fall wedding. The colors, the weather and the locations are simply stunning. But thankfully, they’re not as common as summer weddings, because after the madness of the summer wedding season, we all need a free weekend here and there…more time for football.
- Pumpkin Patches are popping up.
Stephen Little / flickr When the roadside signs start to show up…fall is officially on its way.
- The leaves, they are a’ changing.
Virginia State Parks / flickr Fall seems to be creeping up on us a bit early this year, so get ready for the full-blown fireworks of Virginia fall. There’s just nothing like it.
- THIS.
Eric Spiegel / flickr Virginians are notorious animal lovers..which means our furry friends are going to get some special treatment. But even these dogs are wondering WHY?
- Corn fields go from this…
…to this.
Liberty Mills Farm / flickr When it looks like aliens have taken crop circles to a new level, fall is here.
- I was done at 13, but added a 14th because Halloween makes me superstitious.
Jorbasa Fotografie / flickr Yeah…this one is personal…but can you blame me? This guy knows what I’m talking about.
Now, I know that many of these are not necessarily unique to Virginia and Virginia only. But if you’re going to experience the signs of fall, Virginia is the place to do it!
