Vermont can be a strange place, and it’s largely because of the wonderfully quirky people who live here. There are things we do that may raise some eyebrows to the rest of the world, but we couldn’t imagine life any other way. Let’s look at some of the strange habits we have that make us, well, Vermonters.

  1. You won’t find us stopping to gaze at deer.

Flickr/Charles Wohlers Unless, of course, it’s running across the road when we’re driving. In that case, we’ll stop.

  1. We go hiking after work.

Flickr/Megan Hourihan While the rest of the world is kicking off their shoes after a long day, you’ll find us lacing ours up to get some fresh air. If you’re lucky, hiking is PART of your job, but you still go after work anyway.

  1. We embrace a good DIY project.

Flickr/Robert Rowe Why pay someone when you can do it yourself?

  1. We eat frozen maple syrup.

Flickr/Poom Sugar on snow is a delightful treat but the question is: Do you follow it with a donut or a pickle?

  1. We bring our dogs with us everywhere we go.

Flickr/Y Nakanishi From restaurants to hotels, hikes to car rides, our furry friends are always at our sides. Luckily, many places in Vermont are dog friendly.

  1. We leave our winter tires on well into spring.

Flickr/Royal Broil Oops, I did it again!

  1. We… Don’t put on pants?

Flickr/Anthony Easton In the winter, it’s pretty common to strip off your outer layers and just stay like that. Whether it’s drinks at apres ski or pushing a cart at the grocery store, it’s not uncommon to see people donning their long undies.

  1. Decline maple syrup if it’s not the real stuff.

Flickr/totoro_friend It’s pure VT maple syrup or none at all. There’s a reason we call it liquid gold!

  1. Wearing shorts as soon as it’s above 40 degrees.

Flickr/Lisa Moffatt After a long winter, 40 degrees is practically a heat wave!

  1. Calling people “flatlanders.”

Flickr/Sutha Kamal Sorry! It just kind of comes out!

  1. Calling in sick to work on a snow day.

Flickr/Mike Cough, cough. I’m reaaaallllyy not feeling well today….

  1. We use mason jars for just about anything.

Flickr/Susy Morris After all they are very versatile, not to mention eco-friendly!

  1. We measure distance in time, not miles.

Flickr/Putneypics Drive for about 5 minutes and bear right, then continue for another 15 minutes and you’ll be there.

  1. We don’t automatically use our car horns.

Flickr/Brian Dys Sahagun Although sometimes we probably should…

  1. We will always argue that Vermont is the best state.

Flickr/Patrick Franzis We can’t help it. If someone is negative about the 802 we have to speak up.
