Here in Texas, we’re just a tad bit more proud of ourselves and our state than anybody else – and for good reason. We aren’t trying to be conceited; we’re just sharing the honest truth. I could write a book listing all the ways we’re superior, but for now, I think these 15 things get the point across just fine.
- Country music
Flickr/alishamorgan Everyone knows no other state does country music like Texas - and if they say they do, they’re lying. We’ve produced more stars than I can even count, and the lyrics “deep in the heart of Texas” are unique to our state and hold a special place in all of our hearts.
- Fast food
Flickr/Don Johnson And by that, I mean Whataburger. Need I say more?
- State parks
Flickr/aneyefortexas We don’t mess around about protecting our nature, hence why we have so many state parks. They’re all beautiful and vastly different - from towering mountains to rivers lined with lush greenery - and they’re all beautiful. “Don’t Mess With Texas” rings truer than most other phrases to us.
- Southern hospitality
Flickr/mudmucks Chivalry is the name of our game. You just don’t see people holding doors or ending every sentence with “ma’am” or “sir” like they do here.
- Music
Flickr/robertpaulyoung We’re home to the live music capital of the entire WORLD that hosts two major festivals each year, South by Southwest and Austin City Limits. I think we can all overlook our opinions about the city for a moment to appreciate this awesome fact.
- Football
Flickr/hyku If you’ve been to a Friday night football game in Texas, you know what I’m talking about. I don’t think this one needs any further explanation.
- Fairs and festivals
Flickr/stevenm_61 Not only do we have one of the biggest state fairs in the country with our very own mascot watching over it, but we have countless festivals in both big cities and small towns for every occasion. Oh, and we have the largest rodeo in the WORLD. I almost forgot that little detail.
- Beer
Flickr/stankus How does a cold Shiner after a long, hot day of floating the river sound? Good, of course, because we’re in Texas.
- Dr Pepper
Flickr/midnightcomm And for the kids (okay, let’s be honest - we all love the stuff) an ice cold Dr Pepper hits the spot.
- River tubing
Flickr/paddymurphy There nothing like floating the river with music blasting in your ears and a group of friends to enjoy it with - and no place to do it like Texas.
- Barbecue
Flickr/wallyg If you’ve never experienced the juicy, tender, flavorful explosion that is Texas barbecue, I’m truly sorry for you. Deliciousness like this just doesn’t exist anywhere else.
- Cowboy boots
Flickr/Claudia Daggett If you’ve ever been in a Texas dance hall, chances are you’ve seen many people happily two-steppin’ away in their cowboy boots. It’s a style here, and we wear it darn well.
- College
Flickr.com/akumar We definitely do college better here in Texas. UT, A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor…we have some of the best universities in the entire nation and we’re proud to say it.
- Wildflowers
Flickr/ritahogan Texas is famous for bluebonnets for a reason. If you’ve driven down one of our highways in the spring, you’ve seen them lining the road in all their glory. It’s a truly spectacular sight.
- Road trips
Flickr/Justin Meissen Just how big our state is is explanation enough for this one. It takes longer to drive across Texas than it takes to drive from El Paso to California - that makes for some pretty epic road trips. Not to mention the amazing landscape diversity we have - you don’t even have to leave the state to get a glimpse of every terrain imaginable.
What things do you think Texans do better than anyone else?
