There’s something special about home and the feeling you get upon walking inside after a long day. Nowhere is that feeling more comforting than in Maine. Whether it’s our home or that of a friend, there are certain things we can rely on. While you might find some of these things within homes of other states, there’s something a bit more meaningful about having them in Maine. Here are a few of the things we think you’ll recognize from in or around the place you live.
- The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer.
Michelle Starin For those times when saying “you can’t get there from here, bub!” just won’t cut it.
- A dooryard.

- A well-worn pair of boots.
Steve Byrne / Flickr For all those times in the Maine outdoors.
- A multi-generational family dinner.
Michael & Sandy / Flickr Family comes first. Always.
- A table big enough for the entire neighborhood.
Collin Anderson / Flickr Because you never know who’s going to need a place to eat.
- Firewood, ready for a Maine winter. Or, unfortunate spring.
Chris Ford / Flickr These are more likely in the dooryard, but you’ve got ’em!
- Humpty Dumpty Potato Chips
Laura Taylor / Flickr You may find these in a home in Canada as well, but we all know it’s a Maine thing.
- A variety of car-related snow removal tools.
Mel Green / Flickr And you probably have no idea where you got any of them.
- Sensible outdoor gear.
Lynn D. Rosentrater / Flickr Whether you’re going out for the day or for a longer journey, you’ve probably got some stuff like this hidden away at home.
- Some Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy
Cory Spurling / Facebook A large bottle is the #1 best-selling spirit in Maine. The second best selling? The smaller bottle.
- One of these useful backpacks.
Justin Baeder / Flickr So durable, so monogrammed, so reflective!
- Or, one of these useful tote bags.
Peter Anderson / Flickr Good for just about anything, at least one has entered your home at some point.
- Something from Marden’s. Furniture, shoes, flooring, it could be literally ANYTHING.
Jon Martin / Facebook You should have bought it when it was at Marden’s.
- A split-top bun for summer grilling.
Joy / Flickr A Maine home wouldn’t dream of putting a red dog on any other bun. And a lobster roll on anything else? Forget about it.
- Plenty of love.
Nedra / Flickr If you don’t have any of the things on this list, at the very least you have a hearty helping of Maine love.
Do you have any of these things? What should we add to the list?
