There are certain things you’re almost guaranteed to find in every Alaska home you enter. Of course not ALL homes have these things, but it’s pretty likely that if you were to raid a handful of homes in Alaska, these items would pop up more than most. The Alaskan lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but those who choose to live life in the Last Frontier tend to use these items more often than not. What else can you add to this list of Alaskan necessities?

  1. Crampons.

Jeff Wallace | Flickr Most Alaskans have a pair of crampons ready to go for the many dangerous excursions they go on into the Alaskan wilderness.

  1. Climbing gear.

Tom and Lauren | Flickr From ropes and harnesses to chalk and indoor shoes… climbing gear is pretty common in Alaskan homes.

  1. Waders and fishing gear.

josephbergen | Flickr It’s no surprise that you’d find fishing gear in almost every house in Alaska.

  1. A dog.

Nathan Wood | Flickr It seems to me that EVERYONE has a dog or two in AK. Am I right?

  1. An axe.

coconinoco | Flickr Once you’re about 5 minutes out of any major city in Alaska, there is good chance you’ll find a well used axe in almost every house you pass.

  1. A camera or two.

Elliot Bennett | Flickr If you live in a place as gorgeous as this then you’re bound to have a camera or two sitting around.

  1. Snow clothes.

E M | Flickr It’s cold in Alaska so it’s a guarantee that every house will have a parka and decent snow gear.

  1. Guns.

Mitch Barrie | Flickr Not every house has guns, but many of them do. They are great for protection out in the wilderness or if you live pretty far away from town.

  1. Snow shovels.

odd harmonic | Flickr Snow falls and you gotta pick it up. Enter… snow shovel.

  1. Blue tarps.

judy_and_ed | Flickr Because they are almost as useful as duct tape.

  1. Xtra Tuffs and Bunny Boots

Kim F | Flickr The snow and ice in Alaska demand decent shoes that keep the feet warm. These are the ones you need!

  1. Beer.

Thomas Hawk | Flickr The winters are long and cold here, so you might as well enjoy a beer or two! It isn’t uncommon to find this brand in an Alaskans fridge.

  1. Socks.

osseous | Flickr It’s pretty common for Alaskans to really load up on socks. There is nothing more important than warm, dry feet! Am I right?

  1. Hiking pack.

Paul David Gibson | Flickr As a rule of thumb, everyone in Alaska needs to have a hiking pack… or three.

  1. Skis or snowboards.

Eric Teela | Flickr Are you shocked? Snow sports are huge here so obviously you’d come across a few sets of these when you’re in an Alaskan’s home.

What else would you add to this list? Let me know in the comments.
