For people who don’t know the Green Mountain State well, their minds often jump to the classic VT stereotypes when they think of Vermont. Weather they are true or not, they’re out there for the world to speculate on what it’s like here in the 802. So when you get home from your hippie commune, how about you pour some maple syrup on your Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and dig into this list of things that come to everyone’s mind when they think of Vermont.

  1. Hippies

Flickr/Gustty Visions of long hair, daisies and pot smokers often come to mind when people envision the people of Vermont.

  1. Cows

Flickr It is often said that there are more cows than people in Vermont. While we may see more cows than people on a given day, they don’t really outnumber us. Vermont does have the largest number of cows per capita in the country and according to a study from the University of Vermont, we currently have about 150,000 milk cows that produce some three billion pounds of milk per year. Mooooooo.

  1. Maple Syrup

Flickr/fabulousfabs People associate maple syrup with the state of Vermont and rightfully so. It’s better here than anywhere else and it’s not uncommon for us to opt for no syrup on our pancakes than to use the fake stuff.

  1. Snow

Flickr/GD Taber People think we get a lot of snow here. They’re right.

  1. Beer

Flickr/cogdogblog We love a good beer, and lucky for us Vermont has more breweries per capita than any other state. Along with the professional breweries, making beer is a hobby for many. If you don’t brew your own beer, you likely know someone who does. A special shout out to the Alchemist whose Heady Topper beer is not only delicious, but it often sells out the day it’s delivered to stores.

  1. Phish

Flickr/hlkjgk Phish is a rock and roll band formed at the University of Vermont in 1983 and they have skyrocketed to international fame. People often associate their funky jams with the aforementioned Vermont Hippies.

  1. Winter wardrobe

Flickr/GreggMP With an annual median temperature around 42 degrees, Vermont typically ranks in or around the five coldest states in the U.S. But we’re not only used to it, we’re incredibly tough. We’ve worn shorts in the snow and, yes, we can handle it.

  1. Ben and Jerry’s.

Flickr/origamidon People associate the hippie duo, Ben and Jerry, with all Vermonters. Do they think we wear only tie-dye and decorate everything with cow prints? We do love our Cherry Garcia though.

  1. Flannel

Flickr/Jaaym Let it be known that Vermonters were wearing flannel before all the hipsters. It’s comfortable, warm and resilient. We’re practical, if nothing else.

  1. Foliage

Flickr/kimberlykv People from around the world come for the stunning foliage in Vermont. We love it as well, even if it the leaf peepers create traffic.

  1. Small towns

Flickr/dougtone Since the quintessential pictures of Vermont often capture the expansive scenery, some people who have never been to Vermont think we all live in tiny towns. There aren’t many one room schoolhouses in use anymore folks!

  1. Farms

Flickr/Stanley Zimny We’re all farmers and morning chores include milking the cows and collecting eggs from the coop… Actually they may be right about the chickens….

  1. Skiing

Flickr/stillwellmike It’s thought that all Vermonters ski. While many of us have tried at least once in our lives, it’s not a requirement to live here. But if you do ski, it’s awesome.

  1. Bernie Sanders

Flickr/Phil Roeder Love him or hate him, nowadays when people hear Vermont, they think Bernie Sanders. Do you feel the Bern?

  1. Small state

Flickr/howardignatius This is a correct assumption. With just over 600,000 people, Vermont is the 2nd least populated state.

  1. Guns

Flickr/ photogeek21 Visions of flannel wearing, bearded woodchucks hunting may dance in people’s heads since we do not require people to get a permit to purchase or carry concealed weapons.

  1. Home

Flickr/jimmywayne When Vermonters hear the word “Vermont,” it’s synonymous with the word “Home.”

What other things do you believe come to people’s minds when they think of Vermont?
