For people who don’t know the Green Mountain State well, their minds often jump to the classic VT stereotypes when they think of Vermont. Weather they are true or not, they’re out there for the world to speculate on what it’s like here in the 802. So when you get home from your hippie commune, how about you pour some maple syrup on your Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and dig into this list of things that come to everyone’s mind when they think of Vermont.

- Cows
Flickr It is often said that there are more cows than people in Vermont. While we may see more cows than people on a given day, they don’t really outnumber us. Vermont does have the largest number of cows per capita in the country and according to a study from the University of Vermont, we currently have about 150,000 milk cows that produce some three billion pounds of milk per year. Mooooooo.
- Maple Syrup
Flickr/fabulousfabs People associate maple syrup with the state of Vermont and rightfully so. It’s better here than anywhere else and it’s not uncommon for us to opt for no syrup on our pancakes than to use the fake stuff.
- Snow

Flickr/cogdogblog We love a good beer, and lucky for us Vermont has more breweries per capita than any other state. Along with the professional breweries, making beer is a hobby for many. If you don’t brew your own beer, you likely know someone who does. A special shout out to the Alchemist whose Heady Topper beer is not only delicious, but it often sells out the day it’s delivered to stores.

Flickr/hlkjgk Phish is a rock and roll band formed at the University of Vermont in 1983 and they have skyrocketed to international fame. People often associate their funky jams with the aforementioned Vermont Hippies.
- Winter wardrobe
Flickr/GreggMP With an annual median temperature around 42 degrees, Vermont typically ranks in or around the five coldest states in the U.S. But we’re not only used to it, we’re incredibly tough. We’ve worn shorts in the snow and, yes, we can handle it.

- Skiing
