Texas: either you love it, or you’ve never been here before. Am I right?! We have pride in our state for days, and for good reason. I don’t like stereotypes, but most Texans that I’ve met pretty much go crazy about the following things. If you live here, you will know exactly what I mean.
- Road Trips
Corey Leopold/Flickr Okay, maybe for the first five or six hours. Then, we just really want to get there already. But still, there’s a lot to see here and we love to hop in our cars with friends and family for a good old-fashioned trip across the state.
- Barbecue
Heather Cowper/Flickr And, we will drive long distances and stand in line for hours to get the stuff. To outsiders, this might seem crazy, but to us, it’s almost second nature.
- Fried Food
Jennifer Woodard Maderazo/Flickr This includes chicken fried steak, fried chicken, fries, fried okra..as long as it has the word “fried” in it, we will probably love it.
- Bodies of Water
Nicolas Henderson/Flickr Lakes, beaches, rivers, creeks, water parks, streams, swimming holes..as soon as it hits the low 90s, we will happily cool off in almost any body of water we can find.
- The State Fair of Texas, plus all the local fairs and festivals throughout the state.

- Camping
Kirk Y./Flickr Just not in the dead of summer, but pretty much any other time is fair game.
- Football
spablab/Flickr Doesn’t really matter if it’s high school, college, or pro football, we get fired up about it just the same.
- Ridiculously big trucks
Eric Mueller/Flickr Well, ok, maybe not this big, but we still actually need large vehicles for hauling things. And mudding. And just showing off.
- The Stars At Night
Jonathan.vail/Flickr …are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.
- Beer
Valerie Hinojosa/Flickr People have their preference, but Shiner, Lone Star, and Budweiser are some of the favorites here. Is it beer o’clock yet?!
- Historic Towns
Oemar/Flickr We love exploring small towns like Fredericksburg, not just to immerse ourselves in the history of our state, but to relish in the kindness of small town folk, see the sights, and sample some authentic southern food.
- Farmer’s Markets
Allen Sheffield/Flickr As much as we adore fried food, we also appreciate freshly grown fruits and vegetables, and take pride in knowing where our food comes from.
- Sweet Tea
Personal Creations/Flickr Not just any sweet tea, but Texas sweet tea. And we know there’s a significant difference between our sweet tea and everyone else’s. If we aren’t drinking beer, this is our beverage of choice. Besides Dr Pepper, of course.
- Country Music
Rona Proudfoot/Flickr A great Friday night to us is going to a small town county fair and singing along with some of our favorite country music artists.
- Nature
Adam Baker/Flickr Whether it’s the piney woods of East Texas, the mountains and desolate desert of West Texas, or the rocky terrain and clear blue-green rivers of the Hill Country, we love to get out and see our beautiful state as much as possible.
- Blue Bell Ice Cream
Lars Plougmann/Flickr Despite the bad publicity surrounding the company right now, any self-respecting Texan will tell you this is still their favorite ice cream, without a doubt.
- Simplicity
Sonja Lovas/Flickr We still enjoy the slower pace of a simpler life; we don’t need all that fancy 21st century stuff, just give us a porch to relax on with friends and family, some sweet tea to drink, and some good ol’ southern cookin, and we’ll be happy.
- Schlitterbahn
CJ TravelTips/Flickr Okay, so even though we prefer simple living, that doesn’t mean we don’t like to have some fun at our favorite waterpark when summertime comes around, too.
- Tex-Mex
Ray Bouknight/Flickr Forget Taco Bell; we will take enchiladas smothered in cheese with a side of refried beans and spanish rice any day. Oh, and don’t forget the chips and queso.
- Family
Rachel Kramer/Flickr Even if we don’t always get along with them, our family means everything to us, and we still spend time with them every chance we get.
Yes, I know, I know..I didn’t list them all, but that’s where you guys come in. So, what do YOU love about Texas?
