If I asked you what you remember of the 80s it might include some of what I remember, but you would have your own memories too. Life changes so fast and when I think back to when I was growing up during the 80s and compare it to what I see now, well, let’s just say it’s like light years between the two. I know some of these things will be more universal than others, but for me… this is what it was like growing up in the 80s in South Carolina.

  1. Breakdancing was a thing and people were doing it EVERYWHERE! (Although, sometimes it was just funny!)

  1. Rotary phones! Do young people know what these are? I have to confess that I kind of miss them and their ‘sawing’ sound.

  1. Yes! Garbage Pail Kids. The bane of every parent and the delight to every child.

  1. Who doesn’t remember the “Golden Girls”? I still watch them every night as I go to bed. There will NEVER be another sitcom to like this one!

  1. Dallas. I was so tired of hearing the question, “Who shot J.R.?”.

  1. BIG hair…Really big hair! I swear most girls in my school used a can of AquaNet every morning to get their hair to do this.

  1. Leg warmers…I would still wear them today IF I could find any.

  1. Jellies or Jelly shoes. Everyone had them and, I liked them until I realized my feet would get dirty all the time.

  1. E.T. It was a major movie and I remember having a shirt with him on the front that I wore out.

  1. Saturday morning cartoons for me: He-Man, The Smurfs, Monchhichi, and Strawberry Shortcake and Friends! Scooby-Doo too!

  1. Cabbage Patch dolls were a thing. Everyone girl I knew had one. I remember my friend showing me the signature on her doll’s rear. I had two as well: Colby Irwin and Hattie Dorrine. (I still have them as well as a Koosa!)

  1. My Little Pony - It had to be the design on the rumps that was so fascinating.

  1. Shoulder pads! They were in everything we wore!

  1. Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, and the Culture Club! You can’t tell me that you’re not singing one of their songs in your head at this moment with just the mention of their names.

  1. Tab - Love it, hate it, you can still find it in some stores. My mom drank it religiously and I learned to like it.

  1. I was so excited when we got a VCR. Next we had to figure our where to store all the tapes.

Allan Foster/Flickr

  1. Atari. It was the Xbox of the 80s. Remember Frogger? Hmm?

  1. Cassette tapes - I can still remember my mom carrying a basket with a bunch of different tapes for our car rides.

  1. I believe we all remember the “Just Say No” campaign that Nancy Reagan began. We had assemblies in the gym and the police would come to the school to talk to us about drug use.

  1. The explosion of the Challenger - I think all who saw this on television has it indelibly burned into their memories.

Well, that pretty much sums up what I remember most about growing up in the 80s in South Carolina. What do you remember? Is it an entirely different list than mine? Tell me about it in the comments below!
