Michigan’s coastlines boast hundreds of spectacular views. Whether you’re Up North, in the Thumb region, or along the state’s east coast, you’ll be treated to gorgeous lookout areas and unforgettable natural beauty. In the southwest section of Michigan, however, there’s a spot that has earned its title as one of the state’s most amazing viewing areas — you’ll just have to work a little to get there!

TripAdvisor/Andrew P. You’ve likely heard of Saugatuck, one of Michigan’s most quaint and charming small towns. But there’s more than great shopping and a plethora of art galleries to be found here. Just across the channel from downtown Saugatuck, you’ll find Mount Baldhead and Oval Beach Recreation Area.

Flickr/Steven Depolo Upon arrival at the park, you’ll immediately notice a daunting sight: a long stretch of wooden stairs (302 of them, to be exact) that extends up the side of a large sand dune. But never fear — the view from the top and the relaxing beach on the other side are well worth the climb.
TripAdvisor/pippili As you ascend the stairs, don’t worry if you find yourself huffing and puffing. There are plenty of benches and stops along the way where you can rest your legs and your lungs.
TripAdvisor/scott130 The dune, affectionally called “Mt. Baldy,” stretches more than 600 feet into the air. Had you arrived just a few years ago, you only would have braved 282 steps to reach the top. The extra stairs were added in 2010, bringing the total count to over 300.

Flickr/Richard Boche When you finally reach the top of the dune, get ready to be wowed by the gorgeous, sweeping views. On one side, you’ll get a broad look at the towns of Saugatuck and Douglas. On the other, you’ll catch a lovely glimpse of Lake Michigan.

Flickr/ClatieK The best part of a trip to the top of Mt. Baldy is what follows your cardio-heavy hike. Walk down to Oval Beach and cool off with a dip in the refreshing waters of Lake Michigan. What a spectacular reward for your afternoon workout!
