Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about the Great American Solar Eclipse. This type of eclipse, which will take place on August 21, 2017, hasn’t occurred in the contiguous U.S. since 1918 and won’t happen again for hundreds of years, so it’s a pretty big deal. In preparation for the once-in-a-lifetime event, places all across the country are planning eclipse parties; here are 5 in Mississippi that are perfect for viewing the big event.
- Infinity Science Center (1 Discovery Circle, Pearlington)
INFINITY Science Center/Facebook On August 21st, the Infinity Science Center will celebrate the big event with Solar Eclipse Day. Activities and presentations begin at 9:30 am and continue until the eclipse. Admission, which includes solar glasses, is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors 55 and older, $12 for military, and $8 for children ages 4-13.

- Lynn Meadows Discovery Center (246 Dolan Avenue, Gulfport)
Lynn Meadows Discovery Center/TripAdvisor The fun begins at Lynn Meadows Discovery Center on August 19th, with the Solar Eclipse Preparation Workshop. During the workshop children will have the opportunity to make pinhole viewers and participate in other activities geared toward the eclipse.
The Solar Eclipse Watch Party will take place on August 21st, from 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm. All eclipse-related activities and solar glasses are included with regular museum admission, which is $10 for ages 1 and older, $8 for military and seniors age 62 and older, and free for museum members.

(About 90% of the sun will be blocked in the capital city, so this is a great place to view the eclipse.) Get to the museum by 12:30 pm to participate in a variety of eclipse-themed activities, before heading outside to watch the eclipse. The fun continues until 2:00 pm; however, the eclipse is scheduled to be at its fullest in Jackson at 1:26 pm. This event is included with regular museum admission, which is $6 for adults, $4 for kids ages 3-18, and free for children under 3 and museum members.

The college’s viewing event, which will take place from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm on August 21st, is free and open to the public. Be sure to get there by 1:27 pm, at which time the sun will reach 89% coverage. Solar glasses, pin-hole viewers, and telescopes will be available for use; visitors are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket.
