To be honest, I’ve always preferred the beach more in the fall than summer. The temps are still warm, but the crowds have diminished. You still get a cool breeze every now and then, but you can fully experience the most of what the beach has to offer.
A peaceful ocean soundtrack to fall asleep to at night, gorgeous sunrises, warm days and of course the most beautiful sunset – that’s what a typical day camping on the beach is like. Fall is the perfect time to pitch a tent on the beach, and luckily in North Carolina just that is possible. These 7 campgrounds will offer you an unforgettable experience.
- Frisco Beach
Flickr / Zach Frailey Located in the wild and rugged Outer Banks, Frisco Beach takes camping to the next level. It’s primitive, remote, and you can’t beat falling asleep to the sound of the ocean.
- Ocracoke Campground
Flickr / Punktoad Accessed by boat, Ocracoke Campground allows you to pitch your tent in the dunes by night and catch an ocean sunrise by morning.
- Hammocks Beach State Park
Flickr / dragonflysky If you’re looking for pure solitude, take a 15-minute ferry ride to Hammocks Beach State Park. You might even have a whole beach to yourself - with crystal clear waves included.
- Freeman State Park
Trip Advisor / XenaGirl349 Located at Carolina Beach, take your four wheel drive right on the beach and pitch a tent for a one-of-kind experience. You’ll more than likely be around other campers, but it’s always a party on the beach, right? You can also build bonfires here.
- North Beach Campground
Flickr / Zach Frailey Located on one of the more popular spots on the OBX, Cape Hatteras, this popular campground is perfect for tent camping - or park your RV not far from the beach.
- Surf City Campground
Flickr / Lee Ruk Topsail Beach has been named one of the most beautiful beaches in the US, and you don’t need a beach house to experience it. If you prefer more of a ‘glamping’ experience, Surf City campground has plenty of places to park your RV and walk straight to the beach.
- Oregon Inlet Campground
Flickr / The Cut This Nags Head campground is isolated, quiet and remote. While you might find other campers, there are plenty of secluded spots to pitch a tent - right on the beach or right in the dunes.
There’s really nothing like waking up to the sound of waves crashing on the shore – and also nothing like falling asleep to that sound. I’m ready to pitch a tent right beside the water – what about you? Have you visited any of these before or want to add any to the list?

Sure, camping is fun and all, but what about owning your own private island in North Carolina? These five could be yours!
