Pittsburghers certainly have good taste. That’s just one reason the Burgh is considered a foodie town. But, from time-to-time, we do risk making some food faux pas. Here are just seven food faux pas no Pittsburgher should ever commit. What else would you add to the list?

  1. Using any brand except Heinz ketchup.

Flickr/Mike Mozart Pittsburgh is a Heinz town so we Pittsburghers use Heinz, especially ketchup. Asking for anything but Heinz would, of course, be a pretty big faux pas.

  1. Forgetting to put fries on your sandwich or salad.

Flickr/jpellgen Okay, so maybe we don’t top all of our sandwiches and salads with fries. But, all Pittsburghers have at least one time or another had a hearty sandwich topped with fries and coleslaw. Living in Pittsburgh and never having tried fries on your salad or sandwich? Major food faux pas.

  1. Not finishing a meal at Eat ‘N Park with a Smiley cookie.

Flickr/Devon Christopher Adams Who goes to Eat ‘N Park and leaves without a Smiley cookie? It just isn’t done in Pittsburgh. Whether we eat it after our meal or take it with us, we Pittsburghers know that a trip to Eat ‘N Park just isn’t complete without one of their famous cookies.

  1. Ordering pizza from a chain instead of Mineo’s, Vincent’s Pizza Park, or (insert your favorite local pizza place name here).

Yelp/Whitley S. Sure, the chain pizza places are good in a pinch. But, when you live in a city like Pittsburgh - where you’ll find mouthwatering pizza joints at every turn - you really have no excuse for not eating locally made pizza. After all, wouldn’t you say it’s the best around?

  1. Failing to have a cookie table at a wedding reception.

Flickr/Chris Winters Wedding receptions celebrate a joyous occasion. And, there’s no better way to add flare to that celebration than with the southwestern Pennsylvania tradition of a cookie table.

  1. Asking for a soda instead of a pop.

Flickr/Rene Schwletze We call it pop in Pittsburgh. The eastern half of the state might refer to it as soda but we yinzers call it pop. Calling it soda will simply out you as a non-native Pittsburgher.

  1. Never having eaten an authentic Isaly’s chipped chopped ham sandwich.

Flickr/Steve Wertz Those of us who grew up in Pittsburgh undoubtedly remember going to Isaly’s for a hearty sandwich, a few scoops of ice cream, or just about the most perfect fries. Every Pittsburgher has had - at least once in their life - a chipped chopped ham sandwich.

Pittsburgh lays claim to some iconic foods – from pierogies to chipped chopped ham sandwiches. Still, we do make mistakes. Have you ever committed any of these food faux pas in the Burgh?
