While castles definitely aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Ohio, you might be surprised to know that there are actually several small castles hiding in Ohio. - Cooke Castle (Gibraltar Island)
Ohio Sea Grant/Flickr The Jay Cooke House (also known as Cooke Castle) is located on Gibraltar Island. This 15-room castle was built in 1864, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. Today, it’s part of Ohio State University’s Stone Lab extension campus.

The Wagnalls Memorial/Facebook This beautiful library and community center was built and designed by Mabel Wagnalls Jones in 1925 in memory of her parents. (We guarantee you’ve never seen a public library like this before.)
- The Castle (Marietta)

- Elsinore Arch (Cincinnati)
Wikipedia/Greg5030 Tucked away in Eden Park, you’ll find this beautiful medieval arch. Also known as Elsinore Castle, this arch was constructed in 1883 for the Cincinnati Water Works and was inspired by Elsinore Castle featured in Shakespeare’s classic, Hamlet.
- Frankenstein’s Castle (Dayton)
David S./Foursquare Also known as Patterson’s Tower or the Witch’s Tower, this lone tower overlooks Dayton’s Community Golf Course on Patterson Avenue. Rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of teenagers who were electrocuted after they sought solace in the tower during a storm in the 1960s, this small castle houses a dark past. Today, it’s sealed up and trying to get inside is prohibited.
- Grizer Castle (Whipple)
Grier Castle/Facebook Currently under construction, this lovely little castle is coming soon to the heart of Whipple, Ohio. According to the castle’s website, once it’s open to the public, the castle will be used for various festivals, family fun days and other events.
