South Carolina is a place filled with prominent history. Here are a few things that have happened in South Carolina that maybe you aren’t aware of.
- There’s a place here that’s been named “Sugar Tit.” For real.
Ryan Wiedmaier/Flickr Ok, so there are some oddly named places in South Carolina but Sugar Tit, even though it’s unincorporated, takes the prize in my book. Do you know of other unusually named spots in the state? Let us know in the Facebook comments section below.
- A woman with “truck nuts” on her vehicle was pulled over and fined $455 in 2011 for violating South Carolina’s obscenity laws.
Mike Cargill/Flickr Yup. That’s right. Having big plastic fake testicles can get you arrested in South Carolina. So if you’re a pickup drivin’ plastic-truck-nut toting cowboy - put them back in the toolbox where they won’t offend anyone. Just kidding…you know I love you, right? Seriously though. Put them away.
- In 1958 a nuclear bomb was accidentally dropped here.
[Public Domain] Wikimedia This unfortunate incident - known as the 1958 Mars Bluff B 47 Nuclear Weapon Loss happened in SC when a series of mishaps on board the plane carrying the bomb resulted in the emergency pin getting dislodged. The bomb broke free, falling through the plane’s floor and nosediving 14,000 feet to the Palmetto State. The impact damaged several buildings and created a crater 75-feet across and 35-feet deep. Most notably though, the impact injured six people. They sued the government and were collectively awarded a whopping $54,000.
- Apparently Victoria’s (real) Secret includes prisoners in South Carolina handling the goods…
Cyril Attias/Flickr There was some scuttlebutt after a prison industries audit several years back indicated a subcontractor had hired SC prisoners to make items for the famous lingerie giant.
- Less than 150 years ago an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 hit South Carolina, destroying much of Charleston.
Ken Lund/Flickr Damage extended all the way to the Upstate. That disaster killed approximately 100 people. If the same quake were to occur today it’s estimated there would be 45,000 casualties.
- South Carolina used to have a tire pile you could see from space.
NoHoDamon/Flickr In 2011 authorities discovered a 50-acre collection of tires in Calhoun County that was so big it was said to be visible from space. There were an estimated 250,000 tires in the illegal dump. Recent accounts claim the cleanup efforts are still underway.
- People here actually get sued for breaking off a marriage engagement.
Mark K/Flickr It’s a “Breach of Promise” to take back a proposal of marriage in SC. That’s right…with the high costs of throwing a wedding these days it isn’t cheap to get hitched…and in South Carolina it isn’t cheap to change your mind beforehand, either.
Rattled or shocked by any of these? In the comments section below give us your feedback or tell us about any shocking things you know of that have happened in South Carolina.
